GL Pease Sextant

GL Pease Sextant is a flake with a unique pedigree. It all starts with sweet Virginia and exotic Orientals to which Cyprian Latakia is added. To add a touch of spice, dark-fired Kentucky is included before introducing a top note of dark rum before being pressed and sliced. If you're a fan of Latakia blends and navy flakes, Sextant lands right in the middle.

GL pease sextant
Very nice and pleger tobacco. No for everyday, but I really like it, tested like fruit, with balanced latakia.

Was sad to see the bottom of the tin.
This variety from GL Pease has really been a nice smoke. Lovely depth of flavor. Just finished a tin and it was one that just grows and develops. I would like to try it with a bit of age. I would buy again if there weren't so many more on my list to try.

Deep, hardy, cool, slow burning, and unique.
As described, it is very much a hybrid type of blend, eng-lish, Balkan-ish, nice Virginia leaf in there letting that flake experience come through, and I suspect the Kentucky is what's adding the hardiness I'm experiencing. The rum is noticeable in the tin, but has been pretty light in the few bowls I've has so far. All seeming to stand alone, together. A pleasure to smoke for me, I enjoyed the morphing of flavor throughout the bowl, and the cool clean smell on the mustache. I'd say if you're are not strictly loyal to one particular style or flavor give this a try. I'd like to add this is my first experience with GL Pease and I am not disappointed. Thanks PnC!

A full and sweet smoke, but leaves me wanting more
I found Sextant to be a good morning tobacco, rum flavor aside. The rum topping is very subtle, and I mostly taste the constituent tobaccos, which are high quality. I can't say anything bad about it, but I think in the end it isn't for me . . . after each bowl, I find myself wanting something further . . . more latakia, more this, more that. Perhaps that just means it's very well balanced. 3 stars = definitely worth a try, but doesn't blow me away.

Something special
Sextant is a blend that I really enjoy. It's robust and creamy with enough brightness. The additional liquor is very subtle and adds to the complexity. Every time I want something "extra", Sextant is my preferred choice.

Nice light English blend
This is a really nice blend by GL Pease, although I will say that it isn't what I think of when I think about an English blend. The Latakia is very light here, so light in fact that I have a hard time finding its flavor profile amongst the Virginia's and Orientals. I have to say the same thing about the Dark Fired Kentucky, I know it is there but it is used so lightly that the flavor is very delicate and only noticeable to me when I really sit and contemplate the flavors that I am tasting. This is a bit unusual for me as I am usually able to distinguish the different tobacco flavors in a blend relatively easy. The tin note is quite sweet with scents that are a bit floral, and I can smell rum and fig as well. The moisture level of the tobacco was a bit on the damp side for me and called for a short drying time of about thirty minutes before being packed and smoked. The cut is a medium flake that was easy to rub out and once dried, packed easily and took a flame rather well. The tastes that I am able to detect from the tobacco is the naturally sweet and slightly fruity Virginia followed by the tangy Orientals. The flavors remain consistent throughout the entire smoke with the major player seeming to be the Virginias, at least to me. There is a slightly smoky taste that I am able to detect but I have a hard time deciding whether it is the Dark Fired or the Latakia as again it is very light. In the end, the tobacco burned down to a nice white ash with minimum relights needed to keep the tobacco going for the duration of the smoke. Overall, I was quite impressed with this light English blend, although I wouldn't mind if the Latakia were amped up a bit. I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys a light flavored English or smokers of Virginia blends that wouldn't mind trying something just a bit different.
