I guess that I've become known, to some degree, for my "tribute" blends, like BlackHouse and Fusilier's Ration. But there was one blend that was so venerable that, even though I wanted to, I resisted from trying to make a clone of it. That blend is Balkan Sobranie Original Smoking Mixture. Of course, one concern is that there's a current incarnation of the blend, and like almost all tobaccos, it changes somewhat over time. The new version doesn't seem all that similar to what I smoked in the seventies, so when I finally felt that I missed the old version enough that I wanted to try to match it, the seventies version was my target
When I released Hearth & Home Marquee WhiteKnight, the customer feedback was very positive, so I feel that the effort was worth it. WhiteKnight utilizes the same types of tobaccos that went into B.S.O.S.M. - bright Virginias, magnificent Orientals, especially the "Queen of Tobaccos", Yenidje, and rich, smoky Latakia. There's an incense-like aroma to WhiteKnight that immediately recalls my old favorite, and there's a crispness to the flavor that's unlike most Latakia blends. It also has a short, clean finish that makes it a good choice to pair up with your favorite beverage.

I had heard this was a tribute to the original Balkan Sobranie. Since I have never had and never will have the original, I cannot compare the two. But this one was equally as good as Black House. Even my wife liked it. Would definitely buy more.
This blend is perfect. It's delicious straight from the tin. All day long, in any pipe, during any season.
Ok, this tobacco is great. Smooth, rich, bold yet very piper friendly. Great cut, some nice large pieces of leaf. Smells great in the tin but needs a little dry time to improve burn. I've never had balkan sobranie but I don't care. This stuff is dynamite. I've noticed it on backorder as of late, and when you smoke some you'll know why. Do yourself a big favor and order some now!!!
I must be doing something wrong with this one. Can't pack it properly, can't get a good burn to save my life, can't maintain an ember in the bowl. The smoking session ends up feeling more like a project than a break. I do not have this problem with the other H&H blends I've tried. Go figure. I'll give Russ and team a lot of credit for their ambition here: attempting to recreate the 1970s Balkan Sobranie. While I'm too young to have smoked it, I have certainly heard all the hype. Whatever the case, I'm guessing it was better than this.
Smoking a bowl right now and have already gone through a lot. The tin note has a smokiness to it and a ketchup note in the background, akin to BBQ. The tobacco packs easy enough, though I recommend rub it out some more. It softens it up and allows a good burn, it stays cool. The flavor is a smoky flavor with the orientals in the background, but they give it that oily feel. This is a good tobacco, if you like blackhouse this provides a milder smoke as they are very similar.
Russ hit a home run with bases loaded with WhiteKnight. This is beyond outstanding and I would encourage anybody no matter your blend preference, to try WhiteKnight. Wonderful comforting tin note with just the right amount of Latakia to let you know you are in for a wonderful smoke. First light and you will be smiling from ear to ear. Do not wait another minute... and do yourself a true pipe smoking favor and order a tin of this most satisfying blend from Hearth & Home. Bravo Russ for your efforts on completing what is now my number 1 favorite of all time.
Never mind the Seventies, which are for youngsters. I started smoking Balkan Sobranie when I was in grad school in 1956. The Latakia was outstanding, but it was the Yenidje that really made it. Opening the tin was an olfactory experience in itself. WhiteKnight is the best replica in existence. It really takes me back to the old days on Harvard Square where I discovered Sobranie White. This is the kind of tobacco you can really wrap your mouth around and fill up your senses. Why did we have to wait so long to get a re-creation this good? We had to wait for a blending genius.
I will keep this short and simple. I have smoked everything from aro's to VA flakes, VaPer's, and English's but, WhiteKnight is possibly the best tobacco I have ever had! This coming from mainly an aro smoker.
I love it! The aroma that greets you when you open the tin is bold and delightful. Good stuff!
Milky, smoky, enticing!
Perfect balance. The first tobacco that I could and would smoke all day. Very complex.
Excellent blend. I've been looking for a tobacco that has a good taste and a slight cedar room note. I've found it.
Congratulations, P&C. Instant classic! This one definitely sets the bar as far as Balkan-style blends go. Beautiful balance. Bright. Big clouds of smoke. Will buy more soon, as I don't think this tin will last long. Thanks.
I love this blend. It has just the right amount of Latakia.
I recently had the good fortune to acquire two tins of the "new" Balkan Sobranie , and at $34.00 a tin that was a tough purchase. Some vendors are even charging $55.00 per tin. The new Sobranie is an excellent oriental blend and is worthy of the name Sobranie. However it's nothing like the 1970's blend of which I still have 8oz stored in a humidore. As good as the new Sobranie is White Knight is a most worthy contender to emulate Sobranie --it stands on its own. WK is still the best tobacco I've ever smoked regardless of blend type. Definitely try some.
Frankly, I'm a bit tired of everybody's SEARCH for the mythological perfect reissue of the original Balkan Sobranie. I've been smoking pipes seriously for about ten years, so I'm not obsessed with this longing for a tobacco that I never tasted. I've tried all the recent reissues and enjoyed almost all of them regardless of their accuracy. White Knight is an excellent tobacco, period. Balanced, not overloaded with Latakia (although I love Latakia), this blend is the perfect medium that makes it a great all day blend if you're inclined to do that. Expertly blended, bright and mellow, with complexity and great flavor. Highly recommended!
I'll make this short and sweet. White knight is the best tobacco I've ever smoked and I've been smoking a pipe for 51years. The only tobacco close is the original 1970's balkan sobranie which white knight emulates.
