John Bull

English blends containing the mysterious and smoky tobacco, Latakia, have long been a mainstay among pipe smokers, and nothing is more emblematic of England than John Bull. A true connoisseur’s delight, this supremely cool and smooth mixture uses tamed flue-cured tobaccos, mellow and nutty Burley, a touch of black Cavendish for a subtle sweetness and the star of the blend, magnificent Cyprian Latakia. The result is a well-behaved, all-day mixture that is ultra-flavorful but never overbearing. It’s exceedingly rare to find this kind of premier blend in a pouch, but John Bull is anything but ordinary.

Good English 'Starter Kit'
Not the first English I tried, but it is the first English I liked. If you're new (like me) and want to give English a try, this is a good place to start. See my review of Peterson's Standard Mixture to read what a 'real' English tastes like to a newbie :-)

I Understand That Tobacco Can Change!!!!!
I understand that tobacco can change over time but I had no idea. When I first purchased (2021) this pouch I gave it a go, nope, It was just not anything I would ever consider, to the point I was going to toss it. For some odd reason it managed to find it ways into my tobacco cellar (the closet). I came across it this evening and thought, why not! I had no idea that a tobacco could change this much! It will definitely make its way into my rotation. I find this a good blend after steak and potatoes (a meal). It has that hay pepper taste that satisfies. I know coffee and alcohol goes well with tobaccos but I have found that a Virgil’s Hand Crafted Black Cherry soda is just pleasant with this blend. So on a hot Texas day this will be a treat!

This is a good one,
This is a good one, not quite as spicy or as intriguing as its 'True English' counterpart, but a real English smoke. This blend strikes a nice balance between Latakia and the other components. I find it also not quite as strong as 'True English.' But both blends are at a good price and both are repeaters.

Pretty Good.
Surprisingly complex for a pouch blend. It's in between Peterson 965 and Nightcap, IMO. The Nicotine punch isn't as strong as those two. I'll get some more to jar for a couple of months.

John Bull has become my default English pouch tobacco. I find it to have all the qualities of the more sophisticated (read: 'expensive') blends, some of which are evidently superior and which I have in rotation. It is however a very solid mix, full-bodied, and an excellent value to boot, especially in tough economic times. Recommended.

While some might enjoy the English blends very much, I can only take them in small doses at the present time. The aroma is very pleasant but, the sharpness in my throat and the tip of my tongue point me to look else where for an all day smoke.

Nice blend. Just right amount of Latakia. I blended it 50/50 with black Cavendish just because that's my preference.

Great first English!
This was my first real venture into English plans. Attic smoker before this, but after trying some English plans with a friend I wanted to explore the joys of Latakia :-) if you have any trepidation about English blend, this is a great way to go. This gives a pleasant, cool smoke, it doesn’t even remotely over power. There is no bite. You definitely get the Latakia , as desired, but I don’t find it at all too strong or intimidating. Also, I was not willing to spend 15 bucks on a 10 or something I wasn’t sure I would like to, so the price point for this pouch was very attractive, I think on promotion for about $5.50, which is an easy amount to spend for a tobacco this good :-). I’ve already bought another pouch to give us a gift for my dad, who is a cigar smoker now exploring pipe tobaccos.

My favorite "budget" English
John Bull is a very well-balanced blend that has become over the years my 'go to' English. It has a surprising depth of flavor and character given the budget price, and the enjoyment lasts throughout the entire bowl. Recommended!

Multi-Dimensional Cool Smoke!
A great cool smoking blend. I like traditional English blends but the complexity of this blend goes on and on. The latakia is just the right amount and the small hit of Cavendish continues to push it forward. A great tobacco with many dimensions! Enjoy!

Tasted like left overs! Not good ones!
This purchase is absolute proof that taste is an individual experience .I purchased 2 pouches based what was said by other smokers..their taste did not satisfy my taste. I like a good English style blend.. this John Bull for my pallet, taste like it was made with left overs. I could not finish the bowl. Pitched it and 2nd pouch unopened. So buy one and if you like more power to you. Taste is up to you. I really disliked. Does that matter? Of course not. You may.

A great tobacco at ANY price
I don't claim to have a "sophisticated" palate- I'm no connoisseur, but I've had a pretty wide sampling of tobaccos from OTC $5 blends to expensive, rare, and exotic blends... there is nothing about John Bull that is inferior to any of them, in my humble opinion. It has a satisfying, consistent flavor and burns well. Some have complained that it comes too dry out of the pouch. That has not been my experience. I can smoke it right out of the pouch although, I prefer to dry it out for a couple hours before putting it into a Ball jar. John Bull has become one of my standard smokes.

English
I was trying a variety of English blends and decided the ones I chose were all fairly similar. Burned well and completely but as a class not exactly what I am looking for. Was a little dry in the pouch but the humidor with sponge fixed that.

Out and about in the woods.
This has become my go to tobacco when out and about in the woods. Camping, fishing etc. Sometimes I add an additional pinch or two of latakia to the pouch. Easy smoking, not too moist. Stays lit. Wonderful, just wonderful.

Great blend.Sweet,very cool and Smokey!
I wasn’t expecting such a sweet smoking Latakia blend. It’s different and good. I’d recommend any Virginia or Latakia fan to try this blend. Bulk would be great in this blend.
5 out of 5
A must try blend for Latakia or Virginia fans
I would like to see this available in larger tin or available in bulk. I let pouch breathe for a week and this blend is about good as it gets. Smoky Latakia with some natural sweetness by mid bowl that is just enough to keep me wanting to fill another bowl. It’s slightly sweet and very smoky but clean enough not to bore the palate.

It’s Good For Something DIFFERENT😉👍!
I’be Smoked A Pipe For SOME Time Now👍. Like MANY, I Stayed With A Number Of The AROMATIC Blends🙄, Because They SMELL Good😃. Now, I’m My LATER Years, I’m Moving Toward The NON “Fancy Dancy” Blends🤷🏻‍♂️. The FIRST Pouch Of John Bull I DIDN’T Care For😖! Well, I’m Gradually Developing A Taste For LATAKIA😳! Not There YET, But It’s Good For A CHANGE Of PACE😉👍.

A Proper English indeed
I can't believe how incredibly tasty this blend is considering the price. I would put this up against any other English no matter the price-point. The flavors are well balanced. It's toasty, smoky, warm yet crisp. It has just enough intensity to allow it to be in my pipe for most of the day. Bottom line: John Bull is as the package say, "A Proper English"... delicious!

This is a great all
This is a great all day smoke for me. A good taste of Latakia without being too strong. I’m not a fan of a big nicotine hit so this is perfect for me as I don’t really get much nicotine from it.

My favorite English EVER!
I feel like I've been sampling only English blends all year. This one grabbed me by the taste buds from my charring light to the bottom of the bowl. It's so light yet so flavorful. I have so many blend I enjoy like a multi-course meal: once I'm full I have to recover before the next bowl. John Bull is a blend I can keep in my pipe bowl after bowl. It's just as delicious the first draw as it is that third bowl as I'm tending my herb garden. I can literally smoke this all day and never lose my taste for it. It hasn't bitten me yet and it stays lit exceptionally well. The room note is lovely and it's a truly pleasurable retro-hale. I love love love this blend. I'm ordering more pouches immediately!

Absolute Best
I have been a pipe smoker for many years and probably have nearly 600 pipes in my collection (I've stopped counting, but I still continue to purchase!). Also, I have smoked about every tin, bulk, and OTC the ever existed, but I have to say that John Bull is my absolute favorite. My wife saw an ad for it on her phone from P and C and asked if I had heard of it. Of course, I responded in the negative but it was on sale so I purchased ten pouches. From the moment I opened it, I knew I found my favorite. Since then, I have purchased thirty more pouches and since it is on sale I may purchase tons more. I jar and cellar it. I don't want to ever be without this great tobacco. Of course, I am looking at nearly one hundred tins of various tobaccos and have jars sitting on a table behind my recliner. I will eventually smoke them, but it will take some time since I always reach for John Bull. If you want an inexpensive tobacco with tremendous flavor, then purchase John Bull. If I ever had to be on an island by myself and could take only one brand, it would be John Bull.

I'm relatively new to the pipe but I've sampled enough to know that I REALLY like this blend! It has a robust Latakia flavor (I'm a Latakia man) but it is also smooth. I could see smoking this all day long. Definitely gets my thumbs up.

a surprisingly good mild English
This is mild tobacco but really good. I've been looking for a light English. A bit of Latakia and an absence of aromatic sweetness is just what I need. If you like your tobacco mild this might be just what you need.

One of my favorites. Every pipe gets better and better. Don't let the fact that it's a pouch tobacco turn you away. Smokey, complex, mellow, and a bit sweet. If you let it dry awhile out of pouch it gets even better. Good stuff at any price.

Meh by itself, but *great* for blending!
Like others, I ended up with a pouch of John Bull, and truthfully, I'm not sure how. But I'm open-minded, so I figured I'd give it a shot. It smelled very nice in the pouch, and packed well. At first light, I thought I'd found a winner -- delightful flavor, and nicely smokey -- but shortly, the flavor all but evaporated, and it wasn't producing much smoke at all: it just burned hot. I tried several things, but each time I'd love the fresh bowl, and then it would just go limp. What I ended up doing is mixing it with a Balkan Supreme at 50/50, and that has been an outstanding blend. It lightens up the Balkan just a touch and adds a *great* flavor. I'm definitely going to be getting more - but just to blend with.

John Bull
Splendid tobacco- rich, slow-burning, right amount of Vitamin N, typical English flavour. Great outdoor tabak, stays lit, very dependable. Robust enough to satisfy, mild enough for all day. One of my Great Faves.
3 out of 5
Light on flavor.
Pro's: Easy to light, great mouth feel (for the flavor it had), good room note, dry smoke. Con's: Burned QUICK; almost like I packed my bowl with paper shavings, REALLY lacking in flavor for me, and for an English, I tend to like heavier smoke. For me, flavor is most important thing, and when I smoke an English, I want a HEAVY hit of rich, complex flavor, and for the smoke to feel heavy and weighty to accompany that, John Bull was light on flavor for me but the light smoke did compliment the level of flavor quite well I feel. It's not my thing, but for those with a lighter palate, this might be right for you.

A bumpy start followed by a really smooth ride.
My experience with most tobaccos is a great start followed by the full experience which can be good or not so good. For me John Bull got off to a rough start followed by a great smoke. I bought one pouch as a test but it won't last long because I keep going back.

Easy to like...
There are many good reasons for this blends popularity. The only way you’ll know is to try a pouch. Easy to get lit, stays lit, burns to the bottom of the bowl, clean ash, mild aroma. A very we’ll balanced English style blend. Probably a good one to try if you’d like an introduction to English style tobacco blends. Last but not least, the price is very attractive. Larger packages would be nice...but then there’s the convenience of a pouch.

English with restraint.
Loads/packs well, lights easily, burns well, easy on the tongue, well balanced flavor for an English style tobacco. An easy smoke to the bottom of the bowl, easy pipe clean up afterwards. No bite and my wife says the aroma is nice. Aroma in the pouch is unassuming/pleasant. It has a pretty good nicotine kick too. Very likable stuff. The blends creator has a find sense of balance regarding Latakia percentage...it’s there but not overwhelming. It’s very easy to see why it’s so popular, at these prices it’s a great deal.

This is a winner
I purchased this tobacco as part of a 3 for a buck special. I was super pleased with this tobacco. I was expecting a much more robust English blend but to my surprise it was superbly mild and pleasurable to smoke. This could well be one of my favorites and a type the would be an "every day smoke. I've been away from a pipe for at least 15 years, I am just re-beginning to see what is available since some of the tobaccos I originally smoked are no longer available. This blend will be, no doubt, something which I can enjoy quite often.

This is a very fine English blend that can be smoked all day every day. I enjoy this in the evening after a meal with either coffee or an after dinner cordial. The flavor is a mix of traditional and sweet. The room note is pleasant and can leave a nice sweet lingering effect.

This is Premuim stuff!
Don’t ever look this tobacco! If you’re all about “brand name” or “premium” tobacco you’ll be missing out. The only way to describe this tobacco is to try it. If you don’t wanna pay full price buy it right now because it’s on sale. I did and man I love this stuff. Extremely unique but flavorful. It reminds me of a summer day at the lake BBQing some steaks and drinking beers. This doesn’t taste like campfire but it tastes like a good smelling grill with some charcoal. I know it’s a weird analogy but you’ll see when you try it.

WHAT!?
Well, I never expected a pouch tobacco to be this good. Pouch aroma is like a light Dunhill Nightcap. Taste is not comparable, but its a really nice mellow english blend you could really smoke all day. Room note is nice, tobacco smell with a some campfire smell in there. Being outdoorsy, that is a GOOD thing! The tobacco blend itself is just beautiful in color, blondes, goldens and darks all mixed quite well. Smells great, taste great, room note is great. Burns right down to white ash, and burns very cool. I'll be buying a few more pouches to cellar, right next to my Nightcap :) I like that the pouch is actually sealed! Try some if you like english blends, the pouch makes transport simple.

Well Done
Just getting back to pipes after wandering blindly in cigarette land for fifteen years, P&C offered me a vacation in Europe at a bargain price. Even though the backorder delayed my visit, John Bull was the best of the bunch. Enough smoky Latakia to satisfy, with a wonderful roundedness the burley brings, and a surprise at the price point.

A Pleasant Surprise
Returning to my pipes after a couple of decades, I tried JB from the 3-pouch sampler. I'm not sure that I've ever tried an English blend. I was suspicious after the tin/pouch note and absolutely pleasantly surprised. There's nothing that I dislike about this blend. It has turned me on to English. I expected a hot biting smoke. Not so - smooth and cool. It burns well and evenly in the bowl.

Flying Dutchman / Royal Yacht with Coffee
Wow, reminds me of a cross between the Flying Dutchman and Rayal Yacht I smoked in the late '70s. I normally start the day with cigar and black coffee; then pipe the rest of the day. I purchased John Bull in the recent P&C Casillero pipe promo. When you've been piping as long as I have, since 1968 at age 13, you often can merely look at a pouch brand and you know it's what you want at that moment, even when you've never smoked the stuff prior. On this Thanksgiving Day, I knew this Bull and its predominance of Latakia would go perfectly with coffee in much the same way as anisette goes with coffee. Think about that a moment. Latakia / anisette, right? And boy did I call it! Puff and sip, puff and sip... The coffee clears the palette like wine does during dinner. Then you really taste the Bull blend anew with each puff / sip. Really started my Thanksgiving off wonderfully.

Decent English, in a pinch
I first discovered John Bull when P&C ran an incredible special promotion featuring three pouches for only $1.00...and free shipping to boot. Too good to pass up, and the other brands included were also new to me (Erin go Bragh, C'est la Vie). JB is a solid choice for those of you, like me, who are on a tighter budget these days. It has a respectable Latakia element although it doesn't develop in the bowl as much as other, more complex Lat blends and it tends to burn rather quickly, even if you're not 'pushing' it. That being said, in a pinch, it is a respectable choice for the English enthusiast.

All Day English
I really like this blend. I'm actually a Burley man but sometimes I am in the mood for an English smoke. Lately, I've been turning to John Bull. I would call this a "light" English blend. Hearty enough to satisfy the English craving but mild enough to be smoked all day. Price isn't bad either.

This is a mild-medium Latakia blend that you can smoke all day without that Latakia bomb effect. Probably helps that there is no perique or oriental. And the price is a plus.

Smoother English Blend and the price is right
I'm an old Balkin/English blend smoker but lately my go to blends have been tasting like " Latakia Bombs". John Bull is lighter and smoother without being bland. Might be the fact there is no perique and burley has been added plus less latakia. Recommended!

Taste not anything like described.
I bought this pouch of pipe tobacco over a year ago with the John Bull (2-fer)cigar combo due to the description of its flavor characteristics and after trying it a few times, I just don't get anything but a strong rubber tire flavor. I even tried to put some of it into a milder tobacco to give it a little flavor... Its way too overpowering. The cigars flavor however is just ok, lacking really.

My favorite....
I've only been smoking a pipe for a few years so I have limited experience and have pretty unsophisticated tastes but this is my favorite tobacco. I smoke it in the evening with my arthritis medication (2 fingers of Bourbon) and keep a couple of months worth on hand for the occasional shortages.

Decent English blend
Not bad. It's best enjoyed in a briar that smokes cool. Not good with delayed gratification. Far to ashtray like. Decent. Won't buy more.

Give this bull a ride!
Another winner for English lovers. For the price of this pouch you get a lot of value for your money.Nice and smooth smoke that has zero bite. All favors shine thru with a terrific balance.Smoked in a cob is a great way to go,didn't burn hot at all.For the price you won't find a better english blend.

Delicate Seasoning
JB is my last smoke of the day. Very settling like a fine wine. Seasoned delicately with just enough of a bit of latakia to not be so overwhelming.

Very Nice Light English
This is a nice change of pace from the heavier Latakia blends. Smooth all the way to a fine grey ash. Would buy again to keep in the rotation when wanting a lighter Latakia smoke.

Worth the wait
Found this tobacco as part of a multi pack deal. Bought more then it was discontinued. Waited patiently and it came back

Try it, you'll Like It!
The very first thing one will notice about this extraordinary tobacco is the “tin” note. With the Virginia and bit of Latakia, it definitely smells like a toned down smokey, leathery Dunhill Nightcap, which is enticing. The second thing one will see is that it is a beautifully colored tobacco; light and airy, with a very very fine ribbon cut, and perfect moisture content. All this makes this lovely blend very easy to pack and keep coolly lit, with a central smoldering ember. Even if well tamped, it maintains a pleasant, extremely flavorful and deeply satisfying, easy draw. It is not at all harsh and there is no tongue bite, even if you tend to chug hard. The natural sweetness from the Virginia leaf and touch of toasted Cavendish, with that bit of Latakia, awaits the wise person who decides to give this outstanding pouched tobacco a try.

Definitely Worth A Try
For a tobacco that is sold in a pouch I think John Bull is an excellent tobacco. The label has British like terms and touts it as "A Royal English," and "A Proper English," and those may be slight overstatements. Yet, there is not a lot of detectable flavorings in this except a very small amount of Latakia, and a bit of what seems like toasted Cavendish. So, at least from my understanding its not an aromatic. There is a lot to like about this tobacco. It packs and smokes easily and cool, with a good draw, and is flavorful and satisfying, with a nice room note. This is definitely worth a try. Get yourself a pouch or two and give it a go. You may well be glad you did.

Wife not a fan.
John Bull is a nice smoking tobacco that I will buy again, however, the wife wasn't a fan. I usually smoke this when I'm alone.

John Bull
I have just smoked one bowl of it, but I'm enjoying it greatly. Nice blend stays lit for me better than others blends I've tried.

A nice smoke
Primarily a cavendish smoker, but sometimes you just need a change. Experimented with a couple English blends and settled on John Bull. It's a nice smoke, not heavy or overbearing and there is just enough Latakia in it to make it interesting.

John Bull pipe tobacco is
John Bull pipe tobacco is a very nice blend that for me has a little of everything in flavor, quality and price, in my opinion it is an all day pipe tobacco to be savored and at the price is a no brainer.

Customer Testimonials
I bought the Latakia Lovers Staff Sampler and John Bull was my second bowl of the group. I was curious on whether not a pouch tobacco could capture my taste buds.... well..... It is a very good English Latakia tobacco. I was pleasantly surprised and I will keep some John Bull in my rotation.

I'd give John Bull a 7 out of 10. Latakia is on the light side for me but still an enjoyable smoke. At less than $5 a pouch, an outstanding deal. John Bull is easily the best pouch tobacco I've tried so far. If you are not a fan of aromatics but want a pouch of tobacco to throw in a bag, John Bull fits the bill nicely. I plan on taking a pouch of John Bull with me to Sturgis this year. When touring on a motorcycle; space is at a premium. I can leave my mason jars of Mississippi River and other blends at home (the jars take up a lot of saddle bag room). A pouch of John Bull in my vest pocket will provide me a fine smoke in a portable package. A much better option than buying an overpriced pouch of aromatic tobacco from a gas station when I get to South Dakota.

I strongly agree with a previous review, pouch note smelled like peppered sausage. This was my first experience with English style tobacco. I will probably stick with aromatics because the ladies like them. It was pleasant though.

I got this tobacco in the IPSD set I picked up and absolutely love it. I have not smoked a great many tobaccos but this one is my favorite to date. I will definitely smoke more of this in the years to come!

OK...Seriously what is up with this tobacco? I am not a fan of pouch tobaccos to begin with but for some reason picked this up and it seriously impressed me! The smell of the pouch is delicious, the flavor is full and well balanced, the room note is mildly aromatic, the burn is steady and cool and even the freaken ghosting on my pipe was awesome! I still can't believe I am saying this, but I am buying some more...uhmmm, a few more!

I got this in the great sampler I bought here and it easily compares with the other English I have had. The pouch was fresh!

Great blend, no bite. Ready to smoke out of the pouch. Add a little "blending latakia" to it for the perfect tweak.
AR of Clearwater, SC
Mild, mild, mild. Taste and strength. Excellent flavor but I'd like a bit more. Good introduction to the English blends without being overpowered.
JN of Melvin, MI
Good blend. Very different spice wise then im use to, but in a good way. Good smoking but strong after smell

I recently saw this tobacco was buy one pouch, get one free so I figured I would give it a try. Being a relatively new pipe smoker, this was my first English blend. If other English's are as good and as cheap as this one, I will buy nothing but for now on.
BK of Etters, PA
Very light english blend. Faint trace of latakia. Not bad for an OTC blend, but a bit too mild for my taste. I mixed it with C&D 412 Billy Budd in a glass mason jar to pick it up a notch or two.
MB of Rensselaer, NY
This was my first Latakia blend. The initial smell out of the package made me think that I had purchased some peppered sausage. I'm not sure if this is typical for heavy Latakia blends, but that was what I got from it. Eventually I tried it out and got a wonderful sweet, chocolatey taste with just a hint of spice at the end of the puff. Tasted great with a strong, but nice after taste. Didn't necessarily leave me smelling nice though. The next few times I tried it it was either love it or hate it. I suppose that for my first Latakia tobacco it was good. Would probably buy it again.
