Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired

Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired has quickly become a high-demand classic. An excellent selection of fine Virginias is wed to robust and spicy dark-fired Burleys. The tobaccos are firmly pressed using heat and steam to fully develop the deep rich flavors and to fully marry the leaf. Although the flavor of the dark-fired carries the blend, the sweetness of the Virginias makes this a rich and harmonious experience. Fans of dark-fired Kentucky are going to want to stock up and cellar HH Old Dark Fired.

Please note: The bulk version of HH Old Dark Fired comes in ready-rubbed form. There will be no intact flakes. If you want full flakes, you have to buy the tins or the 16 oz. box.

High quality tobaccos for sure. Smokey rich earthy smell and taste. Will buy again.

Great value for a great tobacco, try using an herb grinder for easier loading
Great value. I like to use an herb grinder to make the ready rubbed easier to load. Let it dry for a few minutes and grind it up a few turns will break down some of the longer sticks. I've had both the flake and the ready rubbed of Old Dark Fired and while I do think I can smell and taste a difference, they're both great. One isn't necessarily better than the other. The grinder really made the ready rubbed easier though. I think I find the ready rubbed slightly less intense than the flake, which is what I want sometimes.

Very good
Probably my current favorite. The flakes are good but the ready rubbed is pretty much the same other than the packing method. Some partial flakes are usually included. Finally bought a pound of the ready rubbed, and I put some away for aging. Great tobacco overall and the ready rubbed is a great option to save money or to try a few ounces. I geta nice BBQ smell from the jar with some lightness from the Virginias.

Only T'baccy I Need
If I could only have one tobacco of my own choice ever again forever Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired would be the one. I smoke it every day. It is perfect.

Very refreshing and stout
Excellent. This is like the Guiness of pipe tobaccos for me, well but maybe not so creamy. If you pull out a flake of this, it is somewhat moist and thick. IT both feels and smells exactly like a slice of quality beef jerky. I recommend opening the tin and either jarring it or letting it air out for a few minutes and then leaving it for a few days and airing it again. Then before smoking I had much more success and enjoyment when I folded and stuffed it and left it in my pipe until the next day. A much more pleasant and tamed experience with no trouble with tongue bite. The two times I tried to smoke it right out of the tin I got a lot of hot air with it which burned my mouth and throat. I think I might prefer this in read-rubbed form personally. It really does have an absolutely fantastic woodsy taste, slightly floral, and even a bit sweet too. It has a little bit of a jerky flavor that comes through, and is decently smoky. The beef jerky essence comes through ever so slightly when smoking it. Really the flavor lavishes the whole tongue with a wonderful fully natural premium tobacco taste. If you're someone like myself that is aiming to have the full gambit of tobaccos in your rotation from latakia englishes, oriental balkans, aromatics, viirginias, etc then this one should absolutely be part of your pipe life. I will go for the read-rubbed version next time myself, even if it ends up being a bit more subdued I can't imagine the flavor being any different, but this is so good that the idea of just packing a ribbon cut and being on my way with this blend is very attractive to me. Hope this helps someone.

Smells and tastes like charcoal
Smells and tastes like charcoal with pork ribs in the smoker. Can't beat that! Heavy flavor and heavy room note but both are awesome!

Tastes exactly like a non-sweet cigar
So I was super excited to try this because I loved Cascadia Vertical Limit so freakin much. But it’s much different in flavor. It really does taste like a decent cigar, which I don’t mind at all, but also not entirely what I was expecting. It is much more like a cigar with the appearance of a pipe, so was kind of a let down for me as I was expecting a greater depth of flavor and some maybe light floral or slightly nutty qualities which it didn’t have at all. There is plenty of flavor, but it is mostly one-sides and doesn’t change much through the course of the bowl, but only becomes a little more mellowed as you smoke it, less poignant, and better melded with itself I would say. As far as what you will taste, it’s leathery, woody, and has a bbq aromatic quality. Almost tastes like the smoke from a burning match a little too. It has zero sweetness to it, and has a slight bitterness to it. There is no floral quality to this flavor. I won’t be buying this again because it is too one-sided of a flavor profile for my taste. If you enjoy cigars you will absolutely love this. It is a high quality tobacco in a nice thin flake. Needs about 15/20 minutes drying time for a better light.

A Great Smoke!
This is my 3rd favorite tobacco. Number 1 is Samuel Smith's 1792 Flake. 2nd is Bold Kentucky. This is a great smoke. If you like a strong smoke, close to a cigar, this is your tobacco. I buy 2-3 lbs at a time.

Nice earthy smooth flavor. Reminds me of something the founding fathers might have smoked.

The black Cavendish is not
The black Cavendish is not as apparent as I like when in the mood for this kind of mixture. But it is satisfying and the heat is easy to control, unlike purely aromatic blends.

All time favorite blend. Very
All time favorite blend. Very dense meaty woody flavor. The virgins with the Kentucky as just amazing in this blend. I can’t say it enough, this is an all time favorite blend of mine. Has a very dense beef jerky aroma out of the tin and Carries it through the smoke.

Worth the Effort
It took me a while to appreciate this tobacco because the moisture level from the tin is too high. After some experimentation with various pipe sizes, what works for me is to rub out a bowlful and place it on a paper towel under a 100 watt lamp for 5 minutes. it dries out quickly and is easier to light and tastes better. I really like the natural tobacco flavor and would say this is a medium full tobacco, not to be smoked too quickly. Patience is a virtue when enjoying this!

Awesome for Mac Baren Mixture lover
Love this stuff. If you usually smoke with a filter but have a pipe with no room for a filter, using hot pressed tobacco in your filter-less pipe is a good solution. It will be more compressed with less airflow, so will smoke colder and need more relighting. So it's also a good solution if you're always smoking hot and having to rest your pipe. Mac Baren Mixture Scottish Blend is my primary tobacco, and this is my secondary.

A classic that smells like a summer BBQ
This one is great. A strong tasty smoke. The aroma has a rich BBQ or brisket smell. One of the first non-aromatics that I tried based on others' reviews, and I was not disappointed. I have not had the flaked version, but this is more than adequate to appease the rich smoky yearning of my soul.

Really strong and flavorful. Smells like bbq chicken. More like a cigarette tobacco.

Great stronger blend, smokey brisket aroma
This was the first real non-aromatic I tried as a new pipe smoker. It had great reviews online, and I was looking for something stronger and many reviews mentioned a "bbq/brisket" aroma. That's exactly what I smell, and it maintains a rich smokey taste as well. I haven't had the flake, but I enjoyed this enough to not worry about trying the flake for now.

This is a good anytime tobacco from first bowl if the day to last bowl of the day. The flake is just a tad bit smoother but this RR Version is great.

A fine tobacco I've been
A fine tobacco I've been smoking for years. Has flavor I describe as a reminiscent of a fine steak charred on the outside. The only tobacco not a latakia blend that I smoke.

Ages remarkably well.
I bought a pound of the Ready Rubbed in March of 2020, liked it so much that I bought a box of the full flakes shortly after to cellar away for a couple of years. It was worth the wait! It smells like BBQ brisket in the raw, reminiscent of the BBQ hut at the State Fair. All bite has been subdued, and the sweetness has been enhanced. The dark fired leaf has married with the Virginia's quite well, and the blend has become even smoother (as if that was even possible). I thoroughly enjoyed this blend two years ago, but it's even better with some age. The jar aroma gets tangy from the fermentation of the Virginia leaf. Like any good quality tobacco with Virginia content, it ages remarkably well. Try some fresh, and stick a quantity in your cellar for a year or more, you will be very pleased with the results!

All day smoke
Great tobacco. Comes wet most of the time, really needs to dry out before smoking. I've bought tins, boxes and bulk. Bulk is the best value, and is pretty consistent order to order. I go through 16 oz per month of this. Not really complex, strong ish, no detectable flavoring agents, so the tobacco tastes like tobacco.

Maybe the best dark fired ever
Wow…. Just wow. I’m about 10 minutes into my first bowl of this stuff, and I’m being reminded why dark fired tobaccos are my absolute favorite. I think I may even prefer this to Bold Kentucky, but not by much, as they are both excellent. I will definitely be ordering more of the ready rubbed bulk, and also some tins to add to my currently modest cellar. This tobacco just screams eloquence, quality, and pure excellence.

I Like It!
Bought 4oz. of this blend to try and I want to say, I like it! My nose and pallet are not as sensitive as some, but to me the bag note reminded me a bit of St. Bruno. So did the taste. This is a moderately strong blend, burley forward, which I like because I'm a burley guy, and has a wife approved room note. It's a great mixer as well. I've mixed it with a couple of other burleys and have found my all day smoke.

Great big taste that's pleasantly milder than expected.
This is my introduction to Dark Fired tobacco, and I'm guessing its a good one. It smells tasty but I worried that it would do some damage to my mouth and tongue. Not so, it's got a great aroma and an excellent smoky, tangy taste. Highly recommended.

smells delightful
opened this up and it smelled great, in a way that I couldn't put my finger on. A couple days later, my wife and I went to a local barbeque place. I ordered the smoked brisket, and when the food arrived, I could identify the smell. The bag aroma of this tobacco smells like smoked brisket. The taste is smokey in a non-latakia way, which is good b/c I'm not a fan of latakia. My wife likes the room note too. This tobacco is very good. However, it isn't going to be an all day tobacco. It's nice for a bowl at the end of the day, but I'll stick to something a little less complex for my all day smoking.

They need to rename this
They need to rename this tobacco to Vitamin N for Nicotine. It's fantastic. My father says it reminds him of smokey jerky. For me, it's easily one of my top favorites. I love the punch it gives. It arrives extremely moist and can be problematic to light at times. I have taken a liking to taking a few flakes out, breaking them up just a bit and letting them sit out for a half hour or so. I have also added some of it to a Virginia blend and it paired well. I could smoke this blend all day, but I've also smoked Pirate Kake all day too. The flavor is hard to describe, it's tobacco flavor, it's unadulterated strong almost fermented, perhaps pungent but not like Latakia. Delicious!

Ready Rubbed is really a Broken Flake it's not fully rubbed out and that's GOOD
Dark and smokey. It's a tasty smoke. I dare not smoke too much due to nic fears, but it's great to have it on hand. I placed my 2oz into a Ball jelly jar. I have been mulling buying more to age, trying to fit it in with all of the other cellar things that I want to order.

Revisiting after ten months
I bought a pound of the ready rubbed ten months ago. I really liked it, but I got a little bit overwhelmed with it after smoking it in the wrong pipes. I am revisiting it now, and I've discovered that I like it best in a smaller size pipes. The flavor is much more consentrated, but in a good way. I think that it doesn't perform its best in a large pipe. This is a very slow burning tobacco, and a little bit goes a long way. It lasts for over 45 minutes in my NM Huck Finn cob (which is a very small pipe), and well over an hour in my medium size pipes. It can last seemingly forever in a large pipe. I seem to like it best in the same type of pipe you normally use for Virginia and VaPer blends. The flavors I'm getting range from hardwood smokiness, a subtle sweetness, and on the retrohale, an indescribable umami (savory) deliciousness that's very hard to beat! I've been smoking this tobacco daily for the past couple of weeks, and I can definitely see it being a strong part of my tobacco rotation. I'll be keeping a good quantity of this in the cellar, so I will always have some, that's a year or more old on hand.

Not a Fan
Not a fan, sorry. I really like Amphora Kentucky Blend, and to a lesser degree C&D Dark Fired KY. But the HH was just too smokey, and too harsh. It does seem stronger, though, so if you're looking for more of a kick HH might be a good try.

Puzzle wrapped in an enigma
Very good stuff! First off the tin note is amazing! Like everyone says- smokey BBQ! First bowl was really sweet. Very Virginia forward. Honestly I’m thinking did I make a mistake? Did all the good reviews just sell me a bill of goods? So I go for bowl no.2. Lighter pack in a smaller pipe. Rewarded with more flavor and some complexity. Was waiting for a N bomb but it never came. Put the second bowl down about 1/2 way through for an hour. Went for smoke break and finished it off. OH MY! Spicy, earthy, woodsy, robust, rich and flavorful! This dude is full of suprizes. Bowl three and four even better. Slow cadence and patience is what’s called for but WORTH it. Buy with confidence. I think I’m going to get the 16 oz flake box next order. This is looking like my new go to

I could tell from all
I could tell from all the reviews I have read that this was going to be a good one. What I like about it so far of course is the cut so that it burns slower. I usually prefer flakes and kakes anyway. This is really a firewood smoke aroma and taste and experience to put it the best way I can describe it. I’m jealous of you guys who are able to sit there and pull out flavors like peach, bread, molasses, leather etc. from just one tobacco! I just can tell if it burns a little, or more, or a lot 🥴. This one can burn you if you smoke too fast which is typical of most right? The retro-Hale is quite soft and pleasant and you really get a non-aromatic near English smoke, which is my final description of this. Will definitely keep buying it. H&H struck again!

Dark Beer and Dark Tobacco
I tend to favor very dark stout beers. I also do that with my tobacco. Because I am only an occasional beer drinker and pipe smoker now, it doesn’t take much to give me a buzz! If you like a strong pipe tobacco I would highly recommend it. But if you are just an occasional pipe smoker just try half a bowl first.

Excellent flavor, great smoke!
I purchased a pound of the Reddy Rubbed Flake, and it's more like a Broken Flake. My pound consists of strands of the broken flakes, far from being fully rubbed out. It's perfect, in this form, to be stuffed right into the pipe, or as a pre-formed plug (as in the Frank Method). This stuff is a great smoke, it's very long lasting, and packs a full flavor and a fairly high dose of nicotine. It smells like a BBQ in the bag (jar), a truly unique aroma. I look forward to enjoying the full pound, one pipe at a time!

Puff the magic Dragon lived by the sea...
The guy above me talked about choochin too hard on the stuff. Well believe me, once you fold and stuff this bad boi into your favorite pipe you will choo choo your way to heaven all night and day! It is downright godly when you get it going. If you get the box it can be somewhat moist so it may require some drying time. People say campfire, chocolate and figs and they are right. The Vitamin N is only prevalent when you toke more than a slow cadence, which is very easy to do because this stuff is darn delish! You will be singing "Puff the magic dragon" while picturing Ben Stiller through the whole bowl. It has to be good because it is NEVER in stock more than a day!

Wow
First off, I'm a fairly seasoned pipe smoker. I tend to stay towards stright Virginia's and English/balken blends. But I've been wanting to try this and I'm glad that I did. This is my first blend of this type, and my first impression is wow. The tin note has a smokey sweet, bbq sauce, dark fruit and chocolate aroma. The flakes inside the tin are a dark brown and presented with care. I took a single flake to give this a spin, which are a bit smaller than flakes I usually work with, and did a half rub out in which I kept the flake slightly intact and stuffed it into my Ben Wade. Upon first puffs after charing light, I got a mouth full of tang, smokey sweet dark fruit. As the bowl progressed a creamy nuttiness became more prevalent and the dark fruit subsided into a complexly sutbtle smokey chocolate and spice. Even further down the bowl the sweetnees intensified and the spiciness became more than a sutbule backround note, and then things started singing into a rich, bold tobacco assault on the senses, all flavors present merged into a creamy complex flavor unable in which I was unable to distinguish them from one another but in the best way possible.... And this tobacco packs a punch of nic. I'm not a light weight by any means, and often smoke medium to full strength tobaccos, but something about this tobacco hit me hard. I rarely ever have to sit down a bowl, but this stuff had my head swimming at around the half way mark, and I I actually couldn't finish the entire bowl. I would highly recommend this tobacco to anyone, but I would suggest to take it very slow!

Smooth,cool and full flavor flakes
I was surprised how cool it smokes right out of tin because it was a bit too wet. I would describe it a bit stronger N wise but it’s very flavorful and I could see mixing it with some blend with a little bite or to add some N or fullness. I’ll get some bulk and store some away. Cured for a while I bet it’s even better.

Mac Baren HH Old dark fired
One of my favourite tobaccos at the moment. Used to like the English blends with latakia, old dark fired gives a different take on smokey and wood notes of tobacco. My preference is to rub the tobacco out fully. Gives a medium to full satisfying smoke. I also mix it with Peter Stokkebye Bullseye Flake in a 50/50 ratio which adds a bit of Virginia to the mix. Highly recommended and a good buy in the 16 ounce box.

Top notch
This is rich, a bit chocolate-like, and yet not at al harsh or heavy. A really fine tobacco.

Pure dark-fired Kentucky flavor at its finest
Old Dark Fired is one of those smokey Kentucky based blends that really compliment the finer traits of Kentucky tobacco. Kentucky is famous for two types of tobacco. Dark Fired, and Burly. Burly is no longer grown in Kentucky like it once was, sadly. Kentucky grown Burly shames the burly on the market now. Still, you can still taste traditional dark-fired Kentucky leaf, which this blend is comprised from. It's good stuff, and rather rare too. Few farmers still produce this leaf. I'm convinced the best of what they do produce finds its way, in part, to Samuel Gawith.

I’m new to pipes. I’ve only tried 11-12 blends, but I can say none are better than ODF. It smokes cool and mellow—no harshness to it. The aroma is pleasant and never overpowering.

Earthy, Leathery, Nutty, Potent
I wanted a straight up Burly when I ordered this. Nothing but earthy tobacco. This met the bill. It needed a bit of dry time, but then smoked well to the bottom. I got the leathery almost chewable burley smoke up front , and then the nutty earthiness on the retro hale. This is winner by my book. I would caution unexperienced to smoke this one with food in the belly and a drink to accompany. The first time I did not and the nicotine hit made me dizzy and a bit nauseous.

high quality flake
I'm relatively new to pipe smoking and I gotta say this tobacco is pretty solid. a little weak on flavour (for a newbie) but for someone with a mature palette, this probably hits the spot. with flavours of barbecue and deep dried dark fruit such as blackberries and others I cannot put my finger on this tobacco satisfies. will definitely buy it again. only reason I give it four out of five is due to the weakness of the flavour on the smoke, though retrohaling does work wonders for this.

One of my absolute favorites!
Slow burning. No biting. Complex blend of flavors. Lots of flavor. Nutty, smoky burley. Grassy virginia. Occasionally something like a cigar note. The room note is definitely tolerable, if not pleasant.

HH ODF READY rubbed
A great rich tobacco that is like smoking a seared fillet mignon with truffles. Maybe a touch of old leather saddle for seasoning. It's the only non-latakia blend I smoke, but it has the depth and richness to keep me content. A couple other blenders have dark fired Kentucky blends, but none have the smooth richness of this one.

Deep and Dark
Some of the best tobacco I've smoked. So rich and full of deep flavor. Deffinately a pleasure to have in my rotation. I always rub mine out and give it an even light. Don't forget pipe cleaners if your smoking this stuff. Goes great with a dark roast coffee in the mornings. Maybe a nice stout for the evenings.

The maduro cigar of pipes
If you are a cigar smoker crossing over to the pipe world like me, this is the blend that comes closest to a full flavor, full strength maduro cigar. It’s an intense flavor with a solid nic hit so be careful not to retrohale too much. Highly recommend you try it!

Memories
Mac Barens Old Dark Fired takes me back to the time when I smoked good cigarettes ( not the massed produced crap). When I was serving in the military overseas they had handrolling tobaccos called Zware shag which was absolutely delicious. I fell in love with it and for the first time truly enjoyed smoking. Of course good cigarette tobacco is harder to find than a leprechaun in the U.S.A. ODF is very reminiscent of those great handrolling blends and my new all day smoke. It is the first truly satisfying tobacco blend that I have found since living in Europe. Disclaimer to the wonderful FDA: I am not advocating rolling ODF into a cigarette so please do not put this tobacco on the endangered species list.

Others have remarked on a campfire aroma, but I could detect nothing, no room note at all. Surprising for such fierce looking weed. Not much flavor, either, just a hot taste in the mouth. Strange brew, indeed.

Underrated Champ
I think Old Dark Fired is an underrated tobacco. Not that it doesn't rate well, but that not enough people give it a try. It smells amazing, rubs out very easily (and I don't usually like flakes because they don't rub out fine enough to pack the pipe well), and tastes, smokes, and hits (nicotine) like a champ. As for the je ne se quoi that every tobacco has, this one just makes me feel rich and refined - and indulgent, in a really gentlemanly way. Give it a try and you will not be disappointed! (Been piping for 3 months)

FANTASTIC TOBACCO!!!
I have been smoking a god 20 years now, and this has become one of my favorites!. I guess I love Dark Fired Kentucky, and I really think the Mac Barens is the best. GL Pease Jacknife, Orlik strong Dark and Peter Heinrichs are all really god and sort of similar in taste and strength , but for me, this one really stands out a bit. It has a little sweetness in the beginning and about half way through, could either be the Virginia or a casing, I really can't tell. And the rest is nice and mellow to the bottom of the bowl. All around, it's just a really satisfying GREAT TOBACCO TASTE. If you love Burleys and the Dark fired type, you have to try this.

Honest and comfortable
What can I say that has not been said prior? I find this tobacco to be of the highest quality in addition to giving the feeling that it is just honest and comfortable. Honest in the way that in my mind when I imagine what tobacco should taste like when smoking a pipe this is ti. Comfortable in the way a old sweat shirt is just right on a brisk autumn day. Lots of flavor and well-behaved
Seems to morph between a sweet and sour flavor and a dark slightly smokey burley taste throughout the bowl and depending on how exactly you pack it. Smokes well rubbed out, a little temperamental in whole flakes, medium-strong flavors and probably a moderate nic hit at best to me.
5 out of 5
Delicious
The hearty flavor improves with age. This tin was two years old! The flavor reminds me of Earth or leather. Two years of aging adds a note of complex, lightly bright flavors that wakes up this blend. Get some to save for a while!

Excellent
Full, bold flavor without being too harsh. It has a hint of that familiar Mac Baren tin note but is not that noticeable during the smoke. With just a touch of sweetness, this is probably my favorite VaBur. And as always great service from P&C.

Rich Pleasant Smoke
Maybe it was just the tin I got but it only had 9 flakes in it. Definitely not a full 1.75oz. That aside it has a full rich flavor, a bit more than I usually smoke but a very rich pleasant smoke. Just smoke it slow, or it will give you a bit of a bite. Hopefully the next, larger tin will have a full measure.

Probably my favorite pipe tobacco
I am not as articulate as some of the reviewers. I am a fan of most Mac Barren brands and this is my first time with ODF. The tobacco smokes cool and unlike some other Mac Barren brands, there is no tongue bite. Some say this provides a "nic hit" but I have not noticed any after two bowls. The tin has a nice aroma with an earthy tone. The smoke tastes and smells wonderful, though I cannot put my finger on exactly what it emulates, maybe a spicy, nutty aroma would be the closest I could describe. In addition, about mid way through the bowl, I could detect what seemed to be a cigar taste which is nice. Overall this is by far the best tobacco I have ever smoked and would recommend it to anyone.

HHODFRR is Tops!
This review is for the ready-rubbed blend. HHODFRR is an outstanding tobacco blend. Because the ready-rubbed tobacco is in a shag form, it is easy to pack your bowl too tightly. Gravity fill to the top of the bowl, press lightly, fill up the rest and you should be good to go. It lights very easy and stays lit throughout the smoke. It has a very lovely scent right out of the bag. The immediate flavors I pick up are earthy and nutty. Traces of cocoa greet you through-out the smoke. The nic hit can be rather high for some. Take your time and sip it. Chuggin' it will get you a date with miss-nic in no time. This one has stayed in my top rotation spot for many months now. Oh, and it also ages really well. Buy enough to cellar and to smoke right then and there. If you love dark-fired Kentucky, this is the blend for you.

HH Old Dark Fired
This is one of my staples. Buy it by the tin and bulk. MacBaron’s and their HH line in particular are high quality and among my favorites. ODF is rich and aged and the flavors are well melded together from being pressed into a flake.

Not my cup of tea
I'm a fan of aromatic blends and within that baccy realm there is an unlimited arena of flavor pleasure. This is a non-aro but one without latakia or perique, which is why I tried it. It is, as some have described, like a camp fire. I don't mind sitting around one smelling it now and then as the breeze moves it around, but that is aroma. I don't care to taste a camp fire or a burning piece of wood in my mouth. I find the aftertaste of a smoldering wood fire to be very unpleasant. I've had this about a year and a half and have kept it because I realize the palette adjusts and changes. In this case, it confirms yet again that I am not among those who prefer dark fired baccy. I'll try another flake in about a year or so...

Simple Full Flavored
No complexity here, straight up rich, creamy and a tad sweet. My first flake, and very happy it was! I will be buying more in bulk, and putting this into my regular rotation. Would also serve as a great base for blending etc. Imo, you can't go wrong here...

Sweet Virginias are present in just the right proportion to ensure the fire cured tobacco doesn't become overwhelming. However, the fire cured leaf leads the show with hickory, earth, and a bit of spice.

Like The Tin Says, Satisfying
To start off Thanksgiving, I enjoyed a bowl of MacBaren HH Old Dark Fired Flake looking down from on top of my hill at the creek below. On a cool, damp morning, this flake is very satisfying...almost warms you up while enjoying with a mug of tea. From the tin, the flakes have a wonderful meaty/smoky/raisin note that follows through to the smoke itself along with the nuttiness that is characteristic of burley. To me, these flavors are most pronounced and best appreciated when retrohaled. I cubed the flakes so they would pack neatly into one of my favorite cobs which resulted in a slow, even burn that produced an almost perfect white ash. Rich, bold and flavorful, this is the perfect smoke if where you live is heading into the colder months of the year.

Very rich and very mellow.
Has a very rich smell in the bag. Room note is very pleasant. Very rich and mellow tobacco taste. Mild and mellow smoke with little to no tongue bite. Best smoked in a billiard or stack style to develop character when slow puffing. I will absolutely buy this tobacco again. This time in the 16 oz. box.

It's OK
I wasn't overly impressed with this tobacco. I bought an ounce of the ready-rubbed version and my first impression was that it was a bit dry. Not too dry but more than I am used to. I also had to rub it out a bit more. That's my personal taste not the fault of the tobacco. Had a pleasant earthy note in the baggie. Upon the first light I was surprise at the mild taste. As a matter of fact it was mild all the way through. Also, there was no tongue bite. According to the wife the room note was border line. It burned well and made plenty of smoke and in spite of being a bit dry it didn't burn fast. Although it was mild I did like the taste. Nothing but natural tobacco. During the last half of the bowl the nicotine kicked in. Nothing debilitating but a definite nicobuzz. Smoked dry down to the bottom of the bowl. A pleasant smoke. I won't make a habit of this tobacco but I'll occasionally try it again.

Straight tobacco No aromatic BS
I smoked Partagas Black Label cigars for years. They are very full bodied cigars. When I tried a pipe, every tobacco I found it seemed was mild and had some flavor or fruity scent added to it. The Old Dark Fired flake isn't as strong as I would have liked, but it works for me. I also like how easy it is to fold up a flake and start smoking. Doesn't take a lot of tamping and messing around like loose tobacco does. Give me a corn cob and a flake and I am happy.

Nice - Hearty
Old Dark Fired is a nice hearty but not as strong as some others but then it's from MacBaren. they're not known to produce really strong tobaccos but this is about their strongerst? Anyway it packs easily for me and burns almost fast in my opinion. but being's its a slightly heavy cut/weel broken flake ,well I tend to pack it loosely for some reason. tastes like the flake and smoky and not appealing to females in the way that latakia isn't I'm giving it three stars just because it's medium /strong and really? nothing to write home about, at least I wouldn't' see the cause. Certainly worth a try for a couple ounces though

Old Dark Fired is an Excellent Blend
Great smoke... fairly strong tobacco with good flavor. The contents of the bag were dry and ready to stoke. Not the least bit harsh or bitey. I also liked the HH Bold Kentucky. This 1 oz. bag was purchased for a trial run and I liked it well enough to purchase the tin version next time. This could be an all-day smoke for me and will become a regular in my rotation.

Surprised!
When I Ordered ODF I just ordered a 1oz just to try it out as I have had a few burley blends that are good smokes but didn't have any wow factor like a good Virginia/perique or English blend. I will say now that I wished I ordered more of ODF, it's taste is very good. Dark and Woodsy also very smooth. I will be ordering more, give it a try it's very good stuff.

Have always enjoyed Mac Barens Golden Extra. Was advised by Mr Jensen of Mac Barens to give HH Old Dark Fired a try. Glad I did. Very rich tasting. Flavorful natural tobaco smoke!
The cut is a bit rough but this is a great natural tobacco for pipe smoking. I bought it to blend a bit of bourbon into and discovered I liked the way it tastes all buy its self.

Flavorful balance of earthiness and sweetness
Earthy, nutty, with some raison and date fruit notes. Smoke is creamy and full-flavored. All in all, an enjoyable experience. However, if you are sensitive to nicotine, you might want to limit yourself to half a bowl because this one can go to your head if you're not careful. Absolutely worth a try!

HH Old Dark Fired Ready Rubbed Mac Baren
This arrived extremely dry and smoked fast and hot. Finally I rehydrated some of it. In fact I am smoking now by chance as I write this. It still burns quickly but cleanly. I am enjoying this very much as a change from my normal heavy Latakias. I highly recommend this tobacco.

Has this changed?
I reviewed this before as a five star... but at least in my last shipment it has changed. What once was ready-rubbed is now ready-pulverized! Lots of unusable dust in the bottom of the bag and all the pieces are much smaller. The only reason I still give it four stars... it still tastes sooo good. But i am still disappointed, probably will change to the flake in the future.

Old dark fired
If you're looking for something with a lot of flavor, but you don't want a flavored tobacco this stuff is great. It has a very bold almost savory flavor. The only thing I would say is you might want to rub some flakes out 30 minutes to an hour before smoking. The flake is a very moist tobacco.

Great way to start the day!
I recently ordered a couple of ounces of HH when it was on sale and I've been really enjoying it. I like starting out with a bowl of it in the morning with my coffee since it's pretty strong on the nic. Definitely will be keeping this one in my rotation.

Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired
Great morning, first pipe. High on the N scale but smooth with no bite. I have smoked Mac Baren tobaccos since 1966 and find all of their products excellent. In the 60's, I could buy the tins at the local drugstore. Now, Pipes and Cigars has all my Mac Baren favorites, at very reasonable prices. Thanks, P and C!

Instant love for MacBaren Old Dark Fired
I purchased MacBaren Old Dark Fired about a month ago, and loved it instantly. A full bodied and very flavorful blend. It reminds me of a lighter version of Latakia. I have a low tolerance for nicotine, and this blend is at the upper level of my tolerance. Rubbing it out, and letting it air dry for half an hour lets me smoke at a casual pace, and keep the effects of nicotine at bay. This is a very special blend has earned a permanent place in my rotation.

Reviewer DD nailed it, nutty & plum, i can't add much to it. Filled my cob with the strips broken into shards and a layer rubbed out on top (forms nice coal bed). Smoked slow with light tamping yeilded a consistent flavor from char to finish. I open a new tin, then close it & let sit for a week or two and moisture is perfect. Purchased 10 tins back in 2012 for aging. Tried it when order was first received, enjoyed it, but felt the VA needed a little aging. Age well it did! inded.
JT of daisytown, PA
ODF is one that I ALWAYS have on hand. I love it! The burly is nutty and plum, with just a little sweetness from the VA. Just the right amount of tin moisture. Not harsh, and I don't get much of a nic hit from it. This is my "any time of day" smoke that I look forward to! Side note: I was riding in the work van with my co-worker the other day. We both had our pipes. He lit up first and I had to ask him what he was smoking, b/c the "room" note was amazing! He said "some of the (Old) Dark Fired you gave me." :) That was the first time I'd smelled it not from my pipe.

This seemed a little harsh at first but quickly improved as I worked my way through the first bowl. Very tasty and pleasant. I am still a novice with flakes, which is why I likely had to relight a few times. All in all - a very enjoyable smoke.

Hands down, one of my favorite pipe tobaccos. Very full and rich, deep tobacco taste, but not overwhelming in the nicotine department. If you like Peterson's Irish Flake, but are not in the mood to get punched in the face by nicotine, this tobacco is for you. Excellent quality leaf is used, which is immediately apparent upon lighting this tobacco. Highly recommended!!!

This is absolutely a beautiful blend of dark fired burleys and slightly sweet virginias. I love burley and this is going to be a go to for me along with Solani Aged Burley Flake for a long, long time. It is certainly strong and full bodied but I love deep, earthy slightly sweet and smooth taste of dark fired burleys and virginias. Recommend for those who love old fashioned blends.

Bought a tin of this from my local cigar shop brought it home only to find the seal broken....smoked it anyways and boy is it GOOD! I like Petersons Irish flake so if you like Irish flake you should DEFINATELY try this while supplies last.

Wow. This is the first flake tobacco I have tried (and a first burley blend), so I don't know if I can compare it to other flake cut tobaccos. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it! A pleasantly cool smoke that smokes better and better as you get down the bowl. It's got a full, smooth taste, along with deep, billowing smoke. I found it to give me quite an extra nicotine rush that I don't get from other full-bodied blends. I would highly recommend any pipe smoker to get their hands on this great baccy.

Nothing new to say here except that this blend has got me all "fired" up about heavily cured Virginias. I bought the 1 lb. box which should age nicely. I'm inspired to try McC's line of matured Virginia.

New to pipe smoking. Have become familiar with the various types of tobacco and their flavors. I think I have found my favorite style, dark fired burley with virginias. Great full tobacco taste and it seems to burn very slow extending your smoking pleasure.

Love this blend. One of my staples. The only problem I have with it is that it disappears too quickly.

Vitamin N and burley give a very nice lift anytime of the day.

I didn't find this one to be overwhelming at all, strong and full flavor without the gut punch of some of the other strong tobaccos. It has a sweet tangy taste that becomes stronger as the bowl progresses, without overloading my taste buds, but I do recommend a glass of water to sip on while enjoying this smoke as it is very dry. It is a flake, but I've found that I enjoy it best fully rubbed out in a medium bowl. It is definitely a quality tobacco.
