MATCH Barking Dog Sale

This is a Match of the original House of Windsor Barking Dog. This is one of the quintessential American English blends made of nutty cube-cut Burley, Latakia and a touch of bright Virginia. Barking Dog is old-fashioned and comforting.

No match for the original
Barking Dog went out of production not all that long ago, so I remkember it well. Like match blends in general, this is no match. While memory still serves, the only non Darking dog Barking Dog was a blend offered by Smokers' Haven called, I think, Pure Pleasure. So why 3 stars? Actually I liked this blend; an American style English that has a good taste and balance.Although my all day smoke is a vaper, I enjoy an evening English. Especially one that is affordable. So, as a match, no. But as a tasty blend, yes.

Good match. Pleasant smoke with touch of Latakia and friendly room note
I began smoking Barking Dog at college in the late 1950's. Enjoyed it then, but years later wanted more and it was gone. Recently, others have made their version of Barking Dog, which BTW was sold under this name even in the 1930s, by others. I have located one unopened carton from around 1960 (either saved or lost it years ago). It is a yellow and white, cellophane sealed carton, with an orange circle with the head of a dog. Below was "BARKING DOG Smoking Mixture Never Bites" Tobacco pouches at the time were folded over, not sealed airtight as now, so I am not anxious to open this one for an enjoyable smoke after over 60 years :-) Barking Dog package is labeled Philip Morris, New York. The original mixture was pressed and cut into neat 1/8 in. cubes. Difficult to keep lit, but burned cool and for a long time. My recollection is that it was mostly Burley, with just a touch of Latakia. Maybe there was other tobacco but could not tell because of small cubes, but the black Latakia was identifiable by color and aroma and made the mostly Burley base more interesting as an all day smoke, with a room note that did not disturb anyone. Normally I smoke heavy English mixtures, and my wife chases me outside the house when I light those up. Regarding the Match Barking Dog, I find that it is a close match to the original, as best I recall after half a century. The main difference is that in Match, I see cubes of probably Burley, with black flakes of Latakia, with lighter flakes of possibly Virginia, but I am not a tobacco expert. Certainly brings back pleasant memories. Just bought another 8 ounces. Three stars because it is a pleasant smoke although not exceptional. Still difficult to keep lit.

What they mean when they "need to see a man about a dog."
I'm still a novice so no purple prose in this review. Just very satisfying. Burley and latakia seem to be my meat and potatoes.

Robust English flavor for a reasonable price.
I can't find the subtle flavors like the connoisseurs, but this, to me, is what a bold English blend should be. The cube cut in the blend slows it down and makes all that richness last a long time.

Very enjoyable smoke. Will definitely buy again.

Barking Dog Match
Not very good. Overall the cut is too course, hard to pack even harder to light and keep lite. Large chunks of black tobacco which I had to cut myself, with razor blade, into smaller pieces. Suggest you contact Sutliff and and see if they can get back to the HOW Barking Dog mixture.

Old Dog Lover
I smoked the original Barking Dog for many years in the lat 1960 through late 70s. It was a nice blend with a pretty fine cube cut. The old Dog had a nice Latakia base and burned well. This version is a much thicker cut and more wet than the original. But, if this new blend is gravity loaded then tamped a bit it will burn well. It has a very deep Latikia and Burly taste that is not as sharp as the original but is really quite good in it own right. I miss the old Dog but give this one a fair shot.

How to enjoy English in the same room as your wife
I enjoy smoking and being with my wife. Not always compatible! Barking Dog is cool, smooth, flavorful and as English as I've ever gotten that my wife found pleasant to be around.

MATCH Barking Dog Review
While I never smoked the original, I thoroughly enjoyed it! MATCH Barking Dog is flavorful, burns slowly and leaves the bowl nice and dry.

I thought it was a great blend. Haven't smoked it in 55 years. Brought back memories. I certainly will put it in my rotation, SM, Elyria, Ohio
