MATCH Elizabethan (New Name - Match Victoria)

This is a match to Dunhill's Elizabethan Mixture. A variety of sweet Virginias are pressed and slightly darkened, then tumbled into a ribbon-cut, which are then blended with fine Louisiana Perique for a piquant flavor. Dunhill fans may miss Elizabethan Mixture, but MATCH - Elizabethan is here, and at a very comfortable price.

The match is somewhat harsher
The match is somewhat harsher ,maybe stronger is the better word, than the original, which suits it well. But it can produce a slight tongue bite, when smoked hot.i am sure that time in storage will mellow that out.overall i am loving it.

Give it time....then it's amazing!
I have never tried the original so I will not compare the 2. On it's own this tobacco is amazing after about six months of age. It's ok fresh, but let it sit and the result is nothing short of stellar. Bready and figgy with no bite and totally smooth. My wife is not a fan of the room note or the beard note right after a smoke but it dissipates quickly.

I have been a Dunhill
I have been a Dunhill My Mixture 965 smoker for literal over a decade, that is until recently. After a major surgery and not being able to smoke for a month, I found that once I was able to fire up again, the 965 was too strong, even harder. So after sampling milder blends, I found that the Match Elizabethan was just great out of the pouch. This was my second 4 ounce purchase, and in the near future the quantity will be increased.

Elizabethan Mixture was my first
Elizabethan Mixture was my first VaPer and I really enjoyed it. I find MATCH Elizabethan more complex, but for the first half of the bowl, the perique doesn't come through enough to my taste. I then realized that Elizabethan Mixture was a wonderful morning blend (for me, I prefer stronger tobaccos later in the day) and the first blend I would smoke all day if stranded on a desert island with nothing else.

Easy to fill your pipe,
Easy to fill your pipe, the taste and aroma are great. It lights pretty well and it's not too heavy of a taste. This is one of my favorite non-latakia blends.

Not even close to navy
Not even close to navy flake Peter Stokkebye. But will do in a pinch for a while.

One year in the cellar commentary
I put two pounds of this in the cellar one year ago. While I enjoyed it very much when I first got it, it has turned into something very special after just one year. The jar aroma is very pungent, with that delightfully fermented vinegar and earthy raisin/figgy aroma, that a quality VaPer has. The Virginias have darkened considerably, and the very ample quantity Perique is Jet black. I aired some out for about half an hour, I learned a year ago that this one (and almost all pipe tobacco) tastes best when it is smoked on the dryer side. It should be dry but not crispy, the ribbons should still be pliable but not stick together when pinched. First light is smooth, and the bowl settles into the honey zone fairly quickly. This is where I taste what tremendous improvement that year of aging has made. It's sweet, but not overly so, spicy and tingley in the nose, a very well balanced raisin/figgy taste, and an altogether indefinable deliciousness. This is something that I'm going to continue buy, and keep in the cellar. I plan on laying down two pounds a year for five years. This stuff is going to be awesome at five years!

Not Disappointed
Received my 8 oz order yesterday and had my first bowl today. I have not tried the Peterson mixture but after trying this blend I don't think that I will have to. From what I have read that it sounds like this blend comes within 90% of the Peterson mixture and if you get that close that's good enough for me. Lights good and smoked down to the bottom without a relight. I will be putting a couple of pounds of Match Elizabethan in my cellar. You should too.

Ages beautifully!
This blend ages into something wonderful! I just opened up a year old jar, and the blend has completely transformed into an even better smoking experience. I still have two one year old pounds packed away, and I'm anticipating great results as more time passes. Do yourself a favor and put a couple of pounds of Match Elizabethan in your cellar, you will thank yourself over and over again!

Try This Va/Per Blend
This has become my every day pipe tobacco blend. It is fragrant without being cloyingly sweet, and I have noticed no tongue bite from the Virginia. The aroma in my humidor, or a freshly opened bag reminds me of dried fruit with maybe just a hint of hay. And of course, the price is right.

Great strong VaPer!
Wonderfully, spicy perique taste complimented by a smooth virginia, if you like VaPers, try this!

This blend is a home run!
Let me start off by saying I have never tried the original Elizabethan. Having said that this is outstanding. I was looking to move away from aromatics and this was such a treat. You definitely taste a delicious mixture of the sweet Virginia with just a touch of spice from the Perique. I am going to order more of this!

An outstanding smoking experience!
This is an incredible smoke, rich and sweet right from the git go. I like it so much that I bought two pounds of it, to jar up in pints and allow to age. For me, this blend is magic in a small diameter tall bowl. It allows for the flavor to develop into an incense, about a quarter of the way down. I smoked this in a small diameter tall bowl churchwarden, that I made myself (I'm a pipe maker). The ratio of Virginia to Perique is perfect, and give an incredibly rich and sweet smoke. Both components are very high quality, and make for an outstanding smoking experience. I've smoking a pipe for 40 years, and I've been getting nervous about all the regulations heading our way. I've been cellaring away a large amount of tobacco, and Match Blends make it easy and affordable. You guys hit a home run with this one, I may have to put even more of it down!

Doesn't Match Well
Everyone's taste is different, of course, but I didn't think the Match Elizabethan was a very close match to Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture. It smelled different in the bag and didn't taste as mild to my palette. It also seemed to have a acrid after-taste. I tried it in several pipes to be sure it wasn't the pipe, but it was the same in all of them. On the plus side, it's a pleasant smoke, except for that after-taste that appeared when it got near the bottom of the bowl.

My EDS (Every Day Smoke)
For the last decade or more, I've been a fan of Virginia Perique tobacco blends. They have a distinct aroma both in the can, and as they are smoked, without the sometimes cloying sweetness of some cheap aromatic tobacco blends. Match Elizabethan has plenty of perique and enough naturally sweet Virginia leaf that it doesn't need much top dressing I suspect it has some, however, for it has an identifiable, almost fermented aroma, or that of dried fruit or flowers that's hard to pin down. Whatever the manufacturer does, is done well. I recommend Match Elizabethan to anyone.

A Tribute to England's Greatest Monarch
Mine came in today, and it's really good.I enjoy the big leafy shreds of tobacco found in my order.I last smoked Elizabethan mixture two decades ago, and don't have much recall about it then. Some grouchy smokers I know may refuse this due to the fact that it is not made by Murray's,and for no other reason. I say to try it.One the leaves marry to each other, it will be even better.

Hark! Forsooth, Match Elizabethan Mixture doeth please thy spirit
A very good mixture; though my pallet prefers Match Presbyterian, I will occasionally alternate with Match Elizabethan just to mix it up a bit. Really closer to a 3 1/2 Star Rating as a smoking experience.

A Pleasant Surprise
A purchase of Match Elizabethan on a whim and I was surprised. It was a tame blend with just enough character to pass on some flavor with a bit of finish that got me to make a note of ordering more.

great tobacco for nicotine content.
So I bought 3oz. of this one, and four other ones. I switched over to smoking a pipe from cheap cigars, that I would inhale. I don't inhale with the pipe, and with Match Elizabethan, I don't feel the need to either. I took away one star, only because it burns a little too fast. Happy piping.

Elizabethan Match
It doesn’t have the strength of Dunhill Elizabethan, but it has an excellent flavor. The perique is forward enough, but the Virginias are just very fine. An excellent daily smoke, but it’s not exactly a one to one replacement for the Dunhill. Still, on its own it’s very good, and I will order it again.

Elizabethan
To me it isn't the same, and yet, a delightful tobacco. Tell Russ I have enjoyed the tobacco. A touch of Picyune boosted the strength. You guys are great! Thanks for your efforts- bravo!

Very good
This blend does not taste like Dunhill Elizabethan, it is in my opinion much better but then I don't much care for Elizabethan. Match is a bit more mild with less nicotine and not as much perique.

Match Elizabethan
I'm dumbstruck. I've always been a Dunhill supporter and dare I say this? But....I think I prefer the Match Elizabethan over the original Dunhill. Smooth and rich, it's a win-win.

New favorite
I had never really been the biggest fan of VaPers, but after seeing a review of Dunhill Elizabethan on Stuff and Things on YouTube, I thought I would try it. Due to availability and price, I chose the Match Elizabethan. It is an excellent smoke with no flaws as far as I'm concerned. Rapidly becoming my favorite go to blend. Five stars.

Excellent Alternative, Price Is Right
I'm a cheap bastard. I admit it. So if you're looking for a top notch pipe tobacco, and don't want to pay the price of tinned blends for your every day smoke, then get Match Elizabethan, especially if you're a VaPer enthusiast like I am. If I had a bigger humidor, I'd buy it by the pound.

Forget it. Bad mix.
I was disappointed in this blend. Smelled bad and tasted bad. I would not order this again

Maybe A Little Much For Some But Good!
If you're a perique lover then this one's for you, the flavoring and aroma of this blend is obviously dominated by it down to the peppery tongue and nose tingle. This blend is a good one for the VaPer fans but may be a little over the top with perique for those who want a more mild smoke. The aroma of the "Match Elizabethan" reminds me of some of the incense that we burned back in the 70's and while it's not bad it's not at the very top of my flavor profiles that I would prefer, I like perique but I don't want it to completely dominate the other ingredients of the blend which in this case are the virginias in the mix. I think that I would prefer the perique to be used as a condiment rather than the main course, much like it is in the "Match Nightcap" blend.

Just to strong for me. Big time tongue bite.

VaPers own me
I bought 4 lbs of this based on the reviews and am thrilled with it. My only complaint is it seems to be disappearing mighty fast. -Bravo Sutliff!

Very good match! I like it better!
I had the Dunhill's Elizabethan, but never the Murray's original version. So I can't compare this match to Murrays. Compared to Dunhill's Elizabethan. I like this Sutliffs match better than Dunhill's version. Taste is similar. However this match just has a little more going on that I like. This being cheaper is also a bonus!

Pretty doggone close.

the match is close enough...
the taste is similar to the dunhill, just not as intense...i love it; it's an everyday burn...i'm trying a 3-1 blending of this with a tin of elizabethian...if dunhill bolts the scene they better not stop making this match blending...i'm buying it pounds at a time...

A Wonderful Smoke.
A great relaxing smoke. A little sweet, and a hint of peppery spiciness. Mild but plenty of flavor. The aroma out of the bag puts me in mind of an old-time mixture without all manner of flavorings and additives. I really like this mix, it has become one of my favorites.

A favorite
This is one of the few tobaccos I've bought more than once. Deep and bright in flavor - almost tangy. Hope it sticks around because we're tearing through it.

Decent vapor
I've never had the original but this was a good straight forward tobacco. It was a little to peppery for my tast.

good smoke
Medium cool smoke. Burns well. Earthy, nutty flavor. Have other blends I'll probably go to first.

Exactly as expected
I have smoked a locally made blend for many years and got an itch to try some others to refresh my memory or "see what's out there." I find Match Elizabethan fully comparable to the original. It is fairly bright, with a toned down sweetness thanks to the darkening and "picquant" is exactly the right word for the the taste the perique adds. It would be 5 star but just wasn't the taste I was looking for.

Match Elizabethan
Got this because I love Dunhill mixes. I can say that you nailed this mixture. It is everything that I would expect from Dunhill except the price! Definitely something that I will reorder in the future.

Elizabeathan Match
Its a tasty smoke, not near as good as Dunhill version...seems to be missing a bit of the perique bite. Dunhill Elizabethan is easily my favorite all day every day smoke...the Match is " close " but a bit flat... I ended up mixing it 66% with Daughters and Ryan Picayune 33% and beefed it up just a touch and found that it was an enjoyable smoke...though it is not equal to the Dunhill.
