Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake

Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake is a modern classic. Layers of choice Virginias, selected for their natural sweetness are combined with a moderate amount of Perique and pressed into blocks and then sliced. A touch of rum is added to complete the "navy flake" profile - smooth, lightly sweet and very satisfying.

This is my favorite tobacco.
This is my favorite tobacco. The perique blend in the Luxury Flake is just right. The moisture content can be an issue. in a humid environment as we have been experiencing. Nevertheless, rotation of pipes and cleaning takes care of the problem. With the price of the tobacco and the increased in shipping cost. It now has become a luxury a person on a fixed income cannot affords. Do not get me wrong the price is still very reasonable.

A very good Va/Per, excellent
A very good Va/Per, excellent price. Spiciness of the Per. is just about right. The only drawback to this Va/Per is that it is a bit on the mild side. If those attributes are what you are looking for, this is an excellent buy.

My goto tobacco, a great
My goto tobacco, a great all day smoke at decent price. The Perique content is somewhere between Orlik Golden Sliced and Escudo which puts it right in my comfort zone. Don’t rub it out use the fold it and stuff method for a more enjoyable smoke. It is best to order in the 16oz size because when it is broken up in smaller portions the flakes tend to get broken up some. Don’t be afraid to try it.

Timothy Hay with Springtime Fragrance
I ordered this for the first time, I must say that I am quite impressed! I guess if they ever wanted to change the name they could call it Farmer Blend. I say this because upon first light I was hit by a note of Timothy Hay! There are other notes that I just can not put my finger on, like the pleasant fragrance that well, pleasant. Very relaxing and enjoyable. It’s has a spring time outdoors aroma that’s just delightful. First time buyer, not the last time either, glad I purchased 4 ounces to go into my rotation. Thank you P&C for the early delivery, customer for life!

Virginia flake
I’ve been waiting for this blend to be available for some time. It was worth the wait, with citrus and Virginia overtones, and good balance in its blending, will order again!

Surprised Me!
Didn't expect to enjoy this blend as much as I did! Just recently started branching out to some paper blends, always heard how hot they burn. This was not. Really like the luxury bullseye flake as well, a bit stronger a little sweeter, but both are great.

quality smoke
I havent fully acquired a taste for this or Peterson's yet, but I'm a relative newcomer. As someone getting a feel for different types of tobaccos, this wasnt a bad smoke...and I think a good example of the virginia side of things

I don't consider myself a connoisseur, far too pedestrian. Nevertheless, I continue to return to PS LNF over the decades because it delivers a cool, dry Virginia smoke without water condensation at the chamber's foot.

Aye, Aye, Captain!
Looking for that wonderful, true, pipe tobacco... this is your stop. No flavoring... just natural luxurious tobacco. Pleasant sweet grass / hay with a light buttery nut on the draw to go along with this awesome tobacco blend with a little spice on the retro exhale through the nose. Short story on the pallette just begging for another puff. Exactly what I've been trying to find. Well done Peter Stokkebye... highly recommend for the one looking for that natural slightly sweet tobacco flavor.

Goldilocks of Flakes
Just right. LNF is the quintessential flake. Incredibly approachable. Not heavy and dark - or highly perfumed - like some English flakes (although those are all lovely), or delicate and fragile like some others (although many of those are also lovely). For a virginia fan there's plenty of grass and brights, for a VaPer fan there's plenty of tingle on tongue and in nose. For aromatic lovers there's just enough topping to give the whole thing a light, honeyed sweetness. This is an everyday flake that is perfect for fold'n'stuffing, and at an unbelievable price point.

A remarkable VaPer
I'm a huge Stokkebye fan, and I bought four 1.5lb boxes of Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake (and four 1.5lb boxes of Bullseye Flake) sixteen months ago. I put everything in one quart mason (Ball) jars, and they've been sealed the whole time. Moisture content out of the box was perfect for storage. I left out a little bit of each so I could have a benchmark (memory) of how they tasted fresh. There are a surprising amount of difference between the two blends, as well as many (unsurprisingly) similarities. Both have darkened significantly and the jar aromas are vinagary and rich, with grassy over tones. The presentation of both is supurb, full boxes of unbroken flakes (medallions), all stack up nicely. I stacked the Navy Flake vertically, two tiers in a quart jar, and stacked the Bullseye Flake horizontally, in three long stacks per jar (and a little bit around the edges to tighten things up. I've reviewed the Bullseye Flake under its review section, but it has become a lot richer and more complex. The Navy Flake is very bread like with a little bit of spice. The manufacturer states that it has a rum topping, but I'm still looking for it. It may be that it's adding to the complexity, in a condiment way (like the Perique is), which is the perfect way to add a topping (subtle and in the background). The flavor is medium, as is the strength (N content). It really is a remarkable blend, and at an attractive price. Price is not my primary concern (I buy Escudo ten tins at a time), but both the Navy and the Bullseye Flake stand on their own two feet as great and proper VaPer blends. Escudo is expensive, and is a treat now and again, the Stokkebye Navy and Bullseye Flakes do the "in between" so well, that comparing them to Escudo (in a positive way) is an honor. I will iterate that these are not a direct replacement for Escudo, they are distinctly different blends both from one another and from Escudo. Put Peter Stokkebye in your rotation, and enjoy!

Really good flavor. Wasn't terribly impressed with the first bowl. 2nd bowl I let it dry out a little longer and tried the fold and stuff method. It burned much better and had much better flavor. Immediately ordered a big pouch to age in the basement in a glass jar

Smells Fresh
Smells fresh and I love this Virginia. Only draw back, it has some kind of spices to it may be because of perique. Risk - its hot :)

My go-to
Great flue-cured Virginia with just the right touch of perique for a little kick and a great flavor. I purchase other blends often for the last few years for comparison but always come back to this one. This is a milder smoke than the English blends I enjoy, the perique being milder than latakia. An all day smoke.

What the hay!
Sweet haystacked goodness. Burns as good as it tastes especially through a narrow chimney. Not a complicated smoke and it isn’t trying to be. A perfect lazy day pipe filler.

Darn good
As I branch out from things I think I would like to things I've never had, a friend of mine gave me about a half oz of this blend the other day. It's my first flake type tobacco as well as my first va/per (having va/ber and stright va in the past). I used my va pipe, and The first thing off the bat I noticed is the peppery note hit me a little hard as I've never had it before, but it wasnt unpleasant. The delicate grassy/ hey like flavor is what I noticed next, with a mellow and mild sweetness that followed. Towards the end of the bowl it gets a little peppery again, with a deeper sweetness. If you go a little fast and get it a little hot, some pleasant barnyard flavor comes thru I do not detect much in the rum or other flavors it may have, but none the less it's a very good smoke. As I'm learning, I tried both the fold and stuff method as well as rubbed it out, and I find that I enjoy this flake rubbed out more than just folded and stuffed. I enjoy this alot and as I'm on my last couple of flakes, I am gonna order some more and age it. I believe this one might age very well. It did bite me a little, but I think that might be a symptom of me not going slow enough and getting overly excited about the flavor rather than the tobacco itself. At its price point its definitely worth 5 stars.

Great with a bit of aging time.
At first I thought it was a bit harsh, but with about six months of aging in a sealed jar, it improved greatly and is now my favorite VaPer.

I might be missing something
I bought a couple of ounces of this to try as I continue to explore va/per flakes. It's gotten better with a month or so of age in the jar, but I don't know if this is for me. To me the flavor is very one dimensional. You can taste the rum and the grassy notes but it ends there. Maybe I'm missing something, and maybe I'll like it more with time, but for now this isn't my thing. I'll stick with Luxury Bullseye for my flake fix, but I'll continue to revisit this from time to time with different pipes and different techniques. Try it, obviously lots of people like this, but if you're looking for a complex smoke like I usually am (I never smoke more than two bowls a day, a pipe is a treat for me) at the end of the day, this probably isn't it.

Updated Review with 3 months of age (Musty Hay to Sweet Grass)
Purchased and smoked upon arrival and got a musty, hay taste (nothing to write home about). Jarred and set aside for 3 months, then, tried again (definitely a good smoke after aging awhile). No More Hay, but, a sweet grassy taste, that I rate between Bullseye and Virginia Slice... Not overly sweet nor too grassy taste, just about right, and easily an all day smoke. I'll be keeping this in rotation. If only 3 months made such a difference, I can't wait to see what a year does for it..

Very Good Bulk Va/Per
I’ve been smoking Peter Stokkebye’s Luxury Bullseye Flake pretty much side-by-side with this Stokkebye’s Luxury Navy Flake. The Navy flake is very similar to the Bullseye flake, as they are both Va/Pers. The main differences are that the Bullseye flakes have black cavendish, and they are cut into coins. The Navy flakes, as with the Bullseye flakes, have excellent burn characteristics, a great deal of flavor and balance between the Virginias and the Perique, and provide long smokes in the right pipe. The Navy flakes smoked well for me in a variety of pipes, but were best in my Rattray’s “Judge” poker and my “tulip” meerschaum carved by H. Ege. These pipes both have deep and relatively narrow chambers, which work very well with flake tobaccos. I use the “fold & stuff” method to load my pipe with this blend, but it smokes and tastes great prepared in other ways, too. Try stuffing, rubbing out the flakes, or even chopping them up, and see which way works best for you. This is a very good blend at a very good price. I guess all that is left for me to do is try Stokkebye’s Luxury Twist next! Highly recommended!

A Good Quality Smoke but...
A decent quality tobacco. Smokes well burning down to a fine ash. Rubs up well. But, too heavy on the flavorings for me. Also contains perique which I was unaware of when I purchased. Perique causes me to have headaches and nightmares. This may be congenital condition. I remember my father (a life long pipe smoker too) having the same reaction to tobaccos with perique. I am still looking for a replacement for my first love - Troost Special Flake in the tin.

Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake
A great tobacco. A very mellow VaPer in which the Perique is not overpowering like in too many other blends. The moisture level is just right. It’s easy to rub out and there are no packing, lighting or burning problems. The smoke is cool and dry. This tobacco won’t bite. It burns down nicely right to the bottom of the bowl. It has the right amount of nicotine that I personally desire. Finally, the 24 ounce box deal from P&C is a great value for such an excellent tobacco. It has become my all-day smoke.

Perfect driving tobacco.
If you like to smoke when you drive, loading the pipe while moving can be as bad as those kids and their texting. Luxury navy flake fixes that, with perfect sized one bowl flaskes, a quick fold in the piep and you are off. Not to mention it is one of the best tasting non-aromatics I've ever bought. I like to mix it up a lot, rarely do I buy something twice, but I've got this at least 3 times already. get you one and leave it in the car
Customer Testimonials
Maybe it's just my tastebuds, but I found Stokkebye's Navy Flake to be WAY better than other flakes I have tried. Considering the price point on this flake per ounce, it is also a no-brainer to buy this flake. Quality flake with a lower price! Also, after being stored for about 6-12 months it becomes really good! Stock up as much as you can. I will.
BW of Hixson, TN
Half the fun for me is working with the flake. Fold and stuff, rub, its all part of the experience. I found this sweet, sort of grassy. Enjoyable move away from aromatics and into the larger world. Affordable and delicious.
JB of lakeside, IA
Just tried this tobacco for the first time. If you like Dunhill Flake or Orlik Golden Sliced, this is a must try. Very nice example of Navy Flake.
CM of Commerce City, CO
I really like this flake. Similar to Orelik Golden Flake, but not identical. A good price for a good navy flake.

The description is spot on. I've tried a few other navy flakes. Most didn't impress me. There are a few that were pretty good, but this one really pleased. Very smooth with just a little sweetness. Burns great right from the start with minimal relights. Tastes high end, but has a budget price. Great for a regular smoke if you want a break from aromatics, but still want a touch of flavor. Highly recommended, even if you've felt 'meh' about navy flakes before.
KR of Glen Burnie, MD
Great stuff! I got a sample of this from a fellow pipe smoker and I enjoyed it so much that I bought 5 oz of it. Nice and smooth with a great taste and aroma. I'll have to order more to fill up my jar! Ha! :)
BW of Pomona, CA
I was looking for a bulk flake with quality blend at a reasonable price. This flake will be re-ordered in much larger quantity than the first 4oz. I'm working on. Very tasty, smooth burning, long lasting.
MW of Ocala, FL
This is a REALLY good Va/Per in my opinion and priced in a way that you can stock up on enough for your cellar too, I think it has a very very light, almost undetectable rum casing that gives it enough sweetness to balance out the tiny bite some may experience from the small amount of Perique that's present here, I would definitely and already have ordered more
SR of Cape Coral, FL
Smooth smoking. May make this my everyday smoke.
MP of Tempe, AZ
This blend is really good. This was my first flake ever and is still my favorite. The flavors are mellow, delicious and consistent to the bottom. The only con to this is if you're not careful it can flair up and cause some tongue bight.
BS of Riverdale, MI
This is a tasty Vaper. It is a regular in my rotation. I usually use the fold and stuff packing of this in my dedicated pipe for Vaper, my Peterson flame grain 999. Nice smoke. This pipe and the flake are meant for each other.
SW of Tallahassee, FL
I am a big fan of this blend. Been smoking it a long time. Glad I found P&C, their prices and service is great. This is not a complex blend but when smoked slowly the flavor grows and stays right to the bottom of the bowl. I like the aroma. Occasionally add a little latakia or burly or both to it. Its a fun blend to experiment with. It's always my "last bowl of the day" . Being a flake it it can be smoked outside in the Oklahoma wind without burning too fast.
GB of Lawton, OK
Being my first Navy Flake, I enjoy it. Nice mellow flavor, burns easy, loads nice.
