Peterson The Royal Yacht

For all of the P&C Faithful who were concerned that Dunhill tobaccos had disappeared forever - good news! The blends are back using the same exact blends and tobaccos, coming from the same factory. The only thing that's different is that they are now under the Peterson name. Even the classic artwork remains.

Peterson The Royal Yacht is a singular blend of bright Virginias for sweetness and darker Virginias for more body and richness. The tobaccos are matured, then combined and finally finished with a unique mixture of flavors to create a blend unlike any other.

Perfection isn't cheap.
In over 20 yrs of I have always kept this around. Now it is number 1. Try it with a filter pipe (9mm), which I have switched to almost exclusively. It isn't the taste per se, which I feel is somewhat muted, Virginia-like but with no citrus, and not a Lakeland VA, as RY retains nuance. It has loads of body and perfect smoking properties, especially the finish, which separates premium pipe tobaccos from the rest.

Amazing Tobacco. They call this an aromatic, but the flavor is very minor, I dont know if I would call it that. You can really taste the Virginia tobacco. Smokes cool, bery enjoyable

I have say, right off
I have say, right off the bat, this is by far the most potent pipe tobacco I have ever had. Granted, I'm still a bit of a newbie to pipe smoking, but I'm learning as I go. The Royal Yacht burns very well and offers an exceptionaly rich smoke. The flavor is barely in the aromatic group, but it's subtle with a bit of hay, dark fruit and almond. Again, I'm new to this, so my palate is not very well developed. If you want a strong tobacco that doesn't blow your head off, then Royal Yacht is definitly worth a try.

peterson the royal yacht
The plum smell right out of the tin is amazing the nic hit is a kick but well worth in taste. Very strong and smells great with the room notes the smell of plum around makes for a great peaceful smoke. It takes a few lights but once it goods it stays with flavor from each puff a sweet smoke worth the purchase.

Nice for the walk around the block;)
My favorite is SG Irish Twist, having a cloud high nic kick, so I find RY to be mild by comparison. However, I do enjoy it’s plum characteristic to both nose & palette. It’s nice to have in my rotation. A nice tobacco for the walk. It’s also an outstanding rolling tobacco.

Not for everyone but it’s for me…A+
Holy Smokes! Finally!! I found a tobacco that tastes the way I yearn for…almost leathery, rich but not spicy, at least not as not the first pack…I’ve looked for this taste, meaty and robust (like some English blends…)I have no idea to the room note, pleasant or otherwise…but this is good stuff…I’m finding that just when I swear I’m a Virginia man, I rediscover burley, etc etc…but I’ve found nothing quite like this…definitely going to order enough to cellar, and enough to smoke so I won’t get into the ones aging. Which means several tins to be sure Wow…can’t say enough,I’ve never tried anything quite like it and I love it!

A true classic
This is a satisfying smoke. A lightly topped medium Virginia tobacco. Somewhat one note, but not in a bad way at all. It is a great tobacco that I reach for often. There are many reviews that talk about the flavor either in a good or bad way, but I would encourage anyone to try it for themselves and pay little attention to other descriptions of it. It's a classic that has been around for a while for good reason.

A very nice smoke, smooth and flavorful.
I smoked almost a tin of this, back when, before I got it. Let it dry a bit, pack it light to medium. I light it with a kitchen match, one strand at a time. Don't rush it. This is a very nice somewhat sweet/grassy VA and a topping (hard to pin down for me but I've heard it''s plum). The topping melds nicely with the underlying tobacco flavor. Smooth as a babies butt, no bite. Even burning. No changes at the end of the bowl. Large amounts of smoke. This is one of my two favorites.

My New #1!
I've already reviewed this blend...I liked it when I first tried it, but since that time it has become, hands down, my absolute favorite tobacco. It even dethroned the mighty Early Morning Pipe (though it remains my second favorite). Royal Yacht is pretty much all I ever want to smoke!

The Blend That Turns You Into a Virginia Blend Guy
Incredibly delicious. Mouth-watering flavors remind you of grass/hay -- but it's so darn good! New smokers wishing to try this (or any VA blends), don't try to inhale the smoke through the stem and bit! Let it do it's thing as you take very small, controlled sips. You'll find the magic. Yes, it will likely require relights more often than most blends - but that means you're doing it right.

Put Some Wind in Your Sails!
It was my turn to try this famous blend, and I was not disappointed! Very flavorful (with plum notes as others have mentioned), and a pleasing room note! The one caveat that I've often heard (and would echo) is that this blend packs a *strong* nicotine punch, and is best smoked on a full stomach...and make sure to pace yourself or you'll get, dare I say, seasick.

Plum crazy.
The Royal Yacht is one of the Dunhill blends that has a bit of a reputation. Simply put, people like to rave about it's nicotine content. I think it IS fairly high in nicotine, but if that's what you're after there are quicker easier ways to get that sort of fix outside of pipe smoking, and better tobaccos to get it from within our hobby. Peterson's Irish Flake, for example, has a similar nicotine level and provides a much more enjoyable experience. Something like Warhorse Bar is also high in nicotine and has infinitely more complex flavors involved. The Royal Yacht is primarily a Virginia blend. I'm a fan of VA, especially well blended flakes, but I need to taste the Virginia to enjoy them and Royal Yacht doesn't really allow for that. Why "Plum crazy"? It's got a topping...an unmistakable plum flavor, that in my opinion does not suit the tobaccos used at all. Dare I say it was almost bitter. For a nice plum aromatic that has plenty of natural tobacco flavors, I'd recommend Mac Baren Plumcake (Nowhere near the same nicotine level though, sorry). In all fairness I should state that I've only ever had my hands on one tin of Royal Yacht, which after only a few bowls and being shared with friends for experience sake, is now mostly cellared away. I hold out hope that this tobacco can be better with age, and perhaps even improve the score I'm rating it here. As it is, right from the tin, it is meh. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. I wont be buying it again for a while, maybe never, since Dunhill in rumored to have ceased production. At this point, if you haven't ever had it, I'd say don't bother. Leave it for it's many fans to stock up on. If Royal Yacht is a regular smoke for them, they'll no doubt need their fix and may even be in panic over the Dunhill news. I'll add that the mechanics of this blend are up to Dunhill standards...moisture level was just right, easily packed & lit, and smoked consistently leaving fine grey ash. It burned a little hot and perhaps a bit too quickly for a relaxing smoke, but then again if you want to relax this is not the right tobacco for you.

Quality without Syrup
I purchased this a while back with my normal Dunhill order and have been sitting on it for a good year. I wouldn't really call this an aromatic while others might. It doesn't have that "sweet, syrupy, heavy topping, cheap tobacco taste" many aromatics do. This is a quality Virginia blend that is easy on the tongue and really quite pleasant. If you're trying to kick the heavy sugar habit, give this a try in your rotation. I certainly lean toward the Latakia blends and this has found a place on my shelf.

Great blend
Always arrives at the perfect humidity level and nicely packed. Raisins and maybe plum (?) to the nose. I load my pipe about medium tight. I light this with a simple kitchen or paper match, literally a few strands at a time, going slow. Once going it's a very nice VA, a little sweet that melds just about perfectly with the topping. If smoked slowly this is a wonderful blend right down to the end: no goop, little dottle and a dry pipe.

A Delightful Smoke
I'm an admitted lover or aromatic tobaccos, but Royal Yacht is a nice, simple, delicious departure from the heavily flavored tobaccos. The tin notes are wonderful, and the smoke is sweet. I LOVE the strong hit of nicotine, and it's a perfect smoke for my drive to the airport in the morning.

Great tobacco, does anyone know of any other one that is similar?
This tobacco is amazing. I've been smoking pipe tobacco for 5 years now and I just came across this blend and it is probably one of my favorites. For some pipe tobacco dudes this is an either "you love it or hate it". I love the nic kick and I love the fact that it isn't overpowering in terms of flavor or casing. It seems to be rather simple enough to be enjoyable for those that aren't too crazy about aromatics to begin with. For those who love Royal Yacht does anyone know of any other tobaccos that are similar to this one? Thanks!

Royal Yacht is the flagship of the Dunhill line. Smooth and flavorful, it would be the only pipe tobacco I would smoke-- if I could afford it🤓

Not so subtle, but a heavy nic kick
This is not a complex blend with an endless number of notes to discover over time. This is a quality, straightforward blend with an impressive amount of nicotene. It's strong, satisfying, and dependably consistent tin after tin.

A Favorite
Love this in a MM corncob. I've tried it in various briars but there's something about the way the cob cools the smoke and brings out the sweetness. One of my favorites.

Crazy Circus Freak of an Aromatic
First time smoker of this blend and I think I will come to love it. Not a huge fan of aromatics, but this is interesting. I get sugar plums, light raisin, and sun-dried tomato both in the tin note as well as the smoke. Burns smooth, but can bite if you puff away on it. Huge Ni-Hit. Buyer beware: This is a polarizing blend- Most love or hate it. I'm firmly leaning towards 'like'. haha Something every smoker should try for fun.

Royal Yacht
The tin description of this says "Exceedingly Mellow"... There's about a dozen or so words that come to mind when I smoke this tobacco and mellow is definitely not one of them. The Royal Yacht is a full flavored, full bodied virginia blend that will undoubtedly wake you up in the morning. I like to smoke this stuff on the way to work in my truck because it stays lit without any effort and the heavy nicotine content definitely kick starts my day. I really recommend this to anyone looking to try something new. The flavor is like nothing else you will ever taste in the realm of ready rubbed virginias. If you want a mellow smoke, this isn't going to be your cup of tea. If you're looking for a full bodied smoke that stays lit, smokes cool, and has an exceptionally unique taste, this is it. Do not fear the Royal Yacht.

An All-Time Favorite
My first "real" premium pipe tobacco, and what an experience! I don't know what that flavor is, but it's there all the way to the end. SO satisfying all the way down. After trying a bunch of other blends, I have decided that I don't want to be without this for quite a while. That's why I'm stocking up.

Kinda tastes like Dunhill cigarettes
The fact that this tobacco tastes like Dunhill's International cigarettes (red box) may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you feel about their cigarettes. I don't smoke cigarettes anymore, but when I did, they were definitely my favorite and worth the extra cost and effort to find. Royal Yacht has a deeper complexity than the cigarettes did, with more of a spicy, almost peppery top note and caramel and really dark coffee on the finish, but a lot of the same aroma and general flavor for sure. Personally, my tin arrived just a bit damp, but a couple of weeks later, it has dried to an acceptable moisture level. I still have a little more trouble keeping it lit than some of my other tobaccos, but I don't know if that's just my tin and atmosphere or a general issue with this tobacco.
5 out of 5
Excellent
Bought this at my local B&M on a whim but overpaid because I live in the high progressive state of Kommiefornia. Anyway, this tobacco is on the stronger side, but still high quality. It has a tendency to burn a little on the hot side if you aren't careful. It also packs a bit of nicotine. I'm an old can of Copenhagen a day person so the nicotine didn't bother me much but I could see this being a little much for someone who isn't quite there. Because of the punch and the way it burns, my favorite thing to do is to mix this with other tobaccos such at the elizabethan mix, and even some aromatics to create a nice complex blend of my own. Don't get me wrong, there are times where I still crave this tobacco on its own, but it also plays well with others.

One for the Rotation!
Terrific Flavor that is consistent, I normally go for Latakia blends based on my tastes but this is definitely one for the rotation. It's a friendly smoke that is cool and easy to keep lit. I let it age in the tin about 4 weeks before opening and enjoyed it on New Years. Several friends also said they liked it when they tried a few puffs!

Great slow smoker.
Royal Yacht is a one of a kind blend. There's nothing else like it. It's my favorite blend and it's worth the price especially if you store some for later. Starts out sweet but strong and ends on the same note if smoked slowly. Eat something beforehand, this one has enough nicotine to drop a horse.

A great full flavor VA blend
It's everything that has been promised. It has a very full and pleasing flavor. Its a bit on the strong side for me but I love it. I just smoke it in a smaller MM cob and sip it to smooth it out and puff a little harder when I want the full blast of flavor. As far as vitamin N its got plenty but not too much. I find nightcap has a bit more but it could just be me. If you like strong VAs you may very well enjoy this.

DONT DRIVE WHEN YOU SMOKE THIS
I'm fairly new to smoking a pipe and I never smoked cigarettes. I smoked my first bowl tonight while sitting by the fire and I'm glad I was sitting down. If you want a blend to relax you after a long day, look no further. I'll be taking a tin of this with me the next time I deploy!

I wouldn't dissuade anyone from trying it
Everyone has their own particular tastes, but this one just doesn't fit mine, and that's okay. I'm sorry Dunhill fans. I like to give a flavor at least three good tries before I make up my mind. Although the product arrived fresh, and I have no problems with the scent in the tin, the flavor in the pipe just didn't sit well. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from trying it however. Might not be my favorite but it could very well be yours. No worries.

Good tobacco!
I saw some good reviews on The Royal Yacht, so I decided to try it. I really liked it, so I ordered a second tin. I guess it is technically an aromatic, but it strikes me as a full Virginia. It's a bit on the strong side, but gives a full flavor and no tongue bite. I highly recommend it.

Good but not great.
Good smoke. I enjoyed it till the bottom of the bowl but I dont see why some peole swear by it as their favirite. Mild, smooth, and basic but missing personality. I think it would be good to blend with a more flaverful aromatic that could use a little smoothing out. Will try blending it with my current fav Lane 1Q. Definately one I will go back to.

I might be ruined.
It's so good I'm afraid I won't venture out as far as I'd hoped. It's like ordering the same thing at a restaurant every time you go because sure, there might be something else on the menu you like but your "usual" is just SO GOOD you can't bring yourself to gamble! In all honesty, it's hard to say "this is my #1 favorite" when I've tried so few but I can't imagine it getting any better than this. It's that good. I'm far from a connoisseur but I know what I like and this is hands down the most enjoyable smoke I've tried. Full body, rich flavor but not overwhelming, cool THICK smoke on every puff, and rarely a relight. You can't help but be in a good mood kicking back with a bowl of Royal Yacht.

one of the best
I have tried well over 100 tobaccos in the 40 years of pipe smoking. Royal Yacht is one of my favorite. Burns well, smells great and taste is pleasant. Goes good with every beverage. The only caution is do not operate heavy machinery or even simple yard chores like weeding because as get into the rhyme your puffing will too....Bang goes a massive nicotine hit that will knock you on your bottom. Else great a great smoke.

My new favorite
It has been hard for me to find a tobacco that I enjoy both the smell and taste of. I normally smoked one of the Borkum Riff varieties but they left me wanting something different. The Dunhill Royal Yacht I am very happy with. Royal yacht has a great taste, little to no bite, a very pleasant aroma that others enjoy when I smoke. All around, this has become my favorite tobacco and will be a customer for a very long time.

Dunhill Royal Yacht
What can I say, this is my favorite. :)
5 out of 5
Mildly disappointing, but not.
I ordered this based upon multiple positive reviews from multiple sources. It's a decent smoke. I primarily smoke heavier English blends, so I didn't detect the subtle nuances mentioned by other buyers. It was ever-so-slightly dry out of the tin, no big deal. 5 stars for nicotine content (my whole head was numb), tolerable taste, not fantastic, but it has some nice aromas. This is a fine tobacco if you despise Latakia, otherwise just order the nightcap for medium Latakia content and a nice nic fix. Frogmorton for light Latakia and less nic. I will finish what I have, but I doubt I'll be ordering more. Again, p&c is a great place to do business! All my packages have arrived earlier than estimated and completely intact. Thanks so much for your service.

Fantastic, unique blend
Royal Yacht produced such polarizing reviews that I had to try it myself. It is great--the strength of the Virginias is really unique. I was told on a forum that these are darker, African Virginias, and this accounts for the intense strength of this blend, since usually Virginias are quite tame in the nicotine department. As far as the blend's topping, I think "plum" is correct, but I'd probably like this a bit more to a nice glass of ruby port--both the tin note, and while smoking. The flavor is subtle--this certainly isn't your standard aromatic--but it's there. It smokes fantastically, burns cool and easy. The most interesting thing about it was how much all of my friends liked it. We have a little pipe hang out about once a week, and I'm sort of the tobacco supplier, as the other fellows don't know much about pipes or tobacco. I texted them that I was making another order, asking if they had any requests, and several of the immediately texted back, "Get some more of that Royal Yacht!" I know everyone has a unique palate, but I think the negative reviews and calling it "Royal Yuck" may be a bit melodramatic. I'd recommend everyone at least try this blend once, as there really aren't many others like it.

Great!
Dunhill The Royal Yacht is a top-notch straight virginia blend. It's flavor is mild enough to be an all day smoke. It's nicotine content is strong enough to satisfy anyone. I like to blend Dunhill The Royal Yacht with perique to make an outstanding VaPer. Enjoy!

Great but could be better....
Strong, straight Virginia like Dunhill Royal Yacht, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Black Cherry Twist are good but they are best when blended with Perique. I just thought Dunhill Royal Yacht was okay when I first got it. I let it age for a few weeks in a mason jar, then blended it with some Perique, let it age some more, blended it with more Perique, then light it age even more before smoking it. What an amazing tobacco blend it has become! I can only smoke the strongest tobaccos otherwise I smoke them too fast. Dunhill Royal Yacht is a little light in flavor on it's own but has the strong nicotine kick that I must have in all my blends. I would recommend this blend to most everyone. I also recommend mixing it with Perique.

Great pipe tobacco
I find that all Dunhill tobaccos are superior. This one seems to be my favorite one because it is full body and I like the taste. I also find that in burns perfectly in a pipe when I smoke it. Sorry that this review lacks the sophistication of more seasoned smokers but I am only smoking a pipe for about six months

Quite a Difference
Aromatics are my preferred choice. Occasionally l enjoy a full English. Royal Yacht is not only my first non-aromatic, but this is the first time that I've smoked a straight blend: several Virginias together. I can't taste the fruit flavoring. The blend has a substantial taste especially if you smoke the entire bowl -- you'll get a pronounced nicotine kick!

All dressed up with no place to go. . .
The best things about this tin are the quality of the tobacco, the processing, and the beautiful tin. It is a beautiful fine ribbon cut tobacco vacuum sealed in a quality tin. As to the smoke. . . save your money. My guess is that, years ago, this was viewed as a treat and something different from the everyday smoking experience. Not so today. There are many better blends out there. I enjoy everything from high-latakia english blends to heavily topped aromatics, but this blend is neither here nor there. It's just a bland, hot-burning tobacco that I wouldn't smoke for free, life's too short and there are too many other more enjoyable tobaccos out there. I am going to try to return the tin I didn't open.

Simply Incredible!
Love it or hate it, there's nothing else like it on God's Green Earth. The tin note is reminiscent of Autumn hay rides. Zero tongue bite ,smooth and a nice kick of nicotine . This is my go to blend a great all day smoke.

Over-the-top Soapy Juicy Fruit flavoring, you either love it or hate it.
This stuff is highly flavored with some kind of soapy fruity topping that you either love or hate. Very polarizing. I don't care for it at all, having ordered a tin a few years back. I'd recommend not using your best briar for this, disposable corncob all the way :D

Dunhill The Royal Yacht Blend A+++++
Dunhill The Royal Yacht is the perfect smoke for the everyday pipe smoker, mild yet full of sophisticated flavors, no need to ever pick up a different blend in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings; Dunhill The Royal Yacht is a must to try, you will not be disappointed.

Dunhill The Royal Yacht Mixture
This is the pipe tobacco I had been searching for 20 plus years. I have smoked just about any blend you can name. Many were classic American blends. I also tried many of the best names in English blends. On a whim I ordered Royal Yacht along with an order I placed and it was love at first puff. It is smooth yet has plenty of nicotine, never bites, and never tires tour taste buds. Hints of pecan, caramel, and light chocolate come though well below the fine Virginia tobaccos. This blend has been around for well over a hundred years for good reason.

A very full Virgina with a big nicotine hit. Quite a luxurious smoke that for me, taken in small doses is a such a treat. Again, in small doses. Anything more and I am floored by it's strength. This was my father's favorite blend. Let it dry for a few minutes before packing. Once dried, this burns so very nice and fills the room with that Virginia toasty aroma I so love.

Great Virginia based tobacco! Really enjoyed the flavor and sweet taste of the blend. I haven't had a blend from Dunhill that I didn't enjoy. Some may find the nicotine level to be a little on the strong side, though I find it to be the perfect level to sit back and relax after a long day. Give this blend a try for certain!

This blend is an old favorite of mine. In the beginning it took me by surprise. The first time it smoked me instead of me smoking it. I tried it on an empty stomach and it punched me in the head and the gut like a fat kid would if he was jones-n for junk food like a junkie (speaking from personal experience). It really is an awesome blend when you enjoy it slowly. You can't puff away like an ol' school steam train and not expect to get punched. I learned to respect the power of this awesome, flavorful tobacco and It has remained in my rotation ever since.

Royal Yacht was once quite "grand"--as it said on the tin, but, like other Dunhill blends, it has devolved from the masterful blends of the 1960's into a generic shadow of its former greatness. Either the old dude (if he's still alive) who created these wonderful, classic blends should come out of retirement; or another, (probably old) dude who REMEMBERS what they were like should try to re-create them.

Dunhill's Royal Yacht (RY) deserves 3 out of 4 stars in my personal review. I am a die hard Virginia tobacco lover, Dunhill Flake, Orlik golden slices, Peterson's 3 P's, Macbaren's Virgina Flake, just to name a few to give you an idea what I enjoy. RY is a full bodied tobacco, with a mild sweetness inside. The room note is not particularly aromatic, but tolerable by most. The tin note reminds me of raisons with a background of walnuts. There is a unique quality I cannot put my finger on that is prevelant in the begining of the bowl, but as you work your way through the half way mark the "uniqueness" fades. Like any Virginias the by product is water, yet there was absolutely no tongue bite what so ever. RY burns very nice, light gray ash to the end, relights are minimal if any. In any new tobacco I smoke three bowls in a new corn cob to achieve a well balanced opinion. The only reason I did not give it 4 stars is, the flavor; although very good, it seemed one dimensional, unlike other VA blends that change as you progress through the bowl. I will definitely buy more and keep in my rotation.

Royal Yacht, like all of the Dunhill blends available here, is the bomb! Great aroma from the tin , to the pipe to the taste and the room note. I have been enjoying it very much. One caution though, if you are easily bowled over by old Vitamin N i would smoke this with caution. It will tend to pack a punch as it goes through the bowl. I highly recommend this wonderful blend. 4 out of 4

On opening the tin you get a strong aroma of raisins that made me hungry. The flavor upon lighting is a full flavored Virginia tobacco. Easy to pack and stays lit wonderfully. Not my every day smoke but if I find it at a good price I would not hesitate to pick one up.
