Samuel Gawith Brown No. 4 Kendal Twist

Samuel Gawith Brown No. 4 Kendal Twist is a hearty, robust rope tobacco made with Virginias and dark-fired leaf. Because S.G.'s brown ropes are not stoved, the flavor might tend to be a bit lighter than the black ropes, more of the strength remains intact. This is a flavorful smoke, best reserved for after a meal.

I like it a lot
Tin date is April 2018. I liked this a lot. Hard to put my finger on why. I guess because it’s full bodied and full flavored and I enjoy full bodied blends. It’s really moist from the tin opening, and kind of a pain in the mechanics of getting it to smoke well. Has to be thoroughly dried. It’s not overly complex but the Virginia does come through in a subtle way. It has a Deli counter, salty meat, creamy, burnt taste with a citrus note at the end of the bowl and it smokes cool with no bite. Despite the negatives, I would but it again in an instant if I could find it again.

Worth the wait!
This tobacco seemed very interesting because of its description. Got on the list to be notified when it was available, glad I did! Don't ever want to run out of this rope.

An Expensive Tobacco Buzz
I bought this tin during vacation. I asked the tobacconist for a heavily nicotine tobacco. He suggested this brand. He claimed that his head buzzed while he smoked this. Normally I prefer aromatics and an occasional full-bodied Latakia. Gawith Brown No. 4 delivers a heavy dose of nicotine: I assume that it's from the processing, that is, leaves are twisted to exude juices which are allowed to ferment on the rope. Truly sip this tobacco on a stomach full of food. This smoke reminds me of smoking the loose cigar leaves which with Drew Estates packages their cigars as a cushion. I gave Gawith Brown No. 4 a two-star rating because you can achieve the same kick from Drew Estates loose cigar leaves at a fraction of what you pay for this English import.

One dimensional.
I was excited to try this but was let down after the first half of the bowl. It started out well with the dark creamy flavor I was looking for but than that just died and was hit with heavy nicotine that reminded me of the first Cuban cigar that I tried. The cigars was much more enjoyable though. I think I'll use it as an additive for mixing my own blends.
Customer Testimonials
Wonderful full bodied smoke. Very heavy cigar like flavor. Room note is that of a cigar. This tobacco is best enjoyed when you want the heaviest of flavors. It is not a complex taste. I first bought this a few years ago when I started smoking a pipe, I found it a challenge to smoke. It required much time in my cellar before smoking. Slice and rub out. I find half a bowl is more than enough to satisfy my want for a smoke. Nicotine kick is very high and slowly ramps up. I would not smoke this on an empty stomach. Love this rope but it needs time to air and requires multiple relights during the smoke unless you are very diligent removing the ash, even then I found I must relight as I smoke through the layers in the bowl.
