Scotty's Butternut Burley

Scotty's Butternut Burley is faintly reminiscent of Lane's 1Q or RLP-6 aromatic offerings, yet in a class all its own. Upon first sparking up, your initial surprise will be the complete lack of tongue bite; this holds true consistently throughout the bowl, as this tobacco has the least tongue bite of any any aromatic going. This blend packs easily, starts readily and simply refuses to go out. It burns completely to a fine, white ash, leaving minimal dottle to contend with in the bottom of the bowl. How is it for taste? Imagine a blend of warm butter with just a hint of vanilla and honey, then add sweet nutty overtones to round out the flavor. After the bowl is done, expect a pleasant lingering sensation on your palate with no bitterness at all. Mellow enough to be an all-day smoke, Butternut Burley leaves a pleasant room note sure to be a hit even with the non-smokers in the crowd. Scotty's Butternut Burley is the perfect tobacco to introduce a beginning pipe smoker to the fine art, and is sure to be a favorite of seasoned veterans as well.

This stuff is great!
I don’t normally smoke aromatics, as they tend to be sugar bombs that smell good and taste bad. This is another story altogether. Great pouch aroma that translates ever so slightly to the bowl. Nice nutty burley that burns great, tastes great, and leaves little goop behind. This is hands down my favorite aro, and one of only two that I smoke regularly.

Mildly aromatic. Not overly sweet and good flavors from the blend. Will order more!

A fine smoking experience
An excellent, well-balanced, flavorful aromatic with well-mannered smoking characteristics. Great smoke output, burns cool, with a wonderful room note. Scotty's Butternut Burley is one of my everyday go-to aromatics.

Pleasant surprise
This was a pleasant surprise when I open the pouch for the first time, I was greeted with this wonderful aroma. I tried it in both my brairs and cob pipes and and loved it from start to finish.

One of the best tobaccos
This is a very pleasant, mild aromatic tobacco

Should be called butter chocolate
Starts bright and becomes chocolatey! must be some good burley, I'd like to know more about the tobaccos, toppings, flavorings used in this blend rather than just how it smokes

Amazingly smooth tobacco
I've had this before, great tobacco with no tongue bite and smokes really smooth, but to me lacks nicotine. I give it 5 stars because I like to blend it with my other stronger tobaccos like G&H dark flake unscented for the absolute best smoke in the world!

Good Flavor, Great Smoke
Great Smoke! Top to the bottom of the bowl Good! Not as much flavor as I thought it would but good smoke/flavor none the less. Similar flavor profile to Molto Dolce but just less flavoring! A new weekly rotation for me!

Russ is extremely talented.
This blend, as well as Hearth Home blends is excellent. Thank You Russ, for sharing you're talent of blending high quality leaf. I as a smoker am very grateful to you.

Not bad, but not great.
Not bad, but certainly not great either. Perhaps it was all the great reviews that gave me a false expectation. It's quality tobacco, and it's true there is no bite. That said there is not much flavor either. It is very close to 1q and I don't find much flavor in that either.

My #1 go to smoke
This blend is perfect for every day of any season. Warm creamy notes of vanilla and chocolate permeate the air and your senses. Creamy delicious smoke that tastes smooth and relaxing. The ash burns to a whisp of nothing. No bite and comepletely enjoyable. Especially with the coming holiday seasons.

Ole Nutter Butter
Butternut Burley, I really love this blend a lot. Now. But it didn't start out that way. Admittedly, the first 2 times I smoked it (in 2 different well-seasoned pipes), I sensed it to be a bland unremarkable burley. But despite my initial disappointment, I had high hopes for this tobacco and was determined to give it all full-measure of fair trial. Call it heresy, lunacy or just plain inexplicable phenomenon, but much to my delight, the second time I smoked it in the very same 2 pipes as before, I got all the full buttery and nutty flavors I was lusting after. And evidently for me, that was no fluke. For any other pipe I own, I have to smoke this blend at least twice in it to get the proper flavor out of it. Go figure. All that oddity aside, I honestly do get nice buttery and nutty flavors washing over my tongue as I had hoped to get from it. And I occasionally detect a thin line of vanilla and honey on the side. And there is no tongue bite from it, and it burns down cleanly to a fine grey ash. The bag aroma is also buttery and nutty to my sniffer, and the room note is pleasant and mild. I doubt anyone who doesn't hate tobacco would ever complain of it. My wife likes it, and she's picky when it comes to tobacco aroma. So now I've settled-in to regularly rotating Butternut Burley with two of the Ole Shenandoah blends, Barrel No. 76 and Bootlegged. These have now become my Fave Three, with other old faves now in the less-frequent occasional opt-in lineup. So now I sometimes jokingly call it "Ole Nutter Butter". Yeah... I like those cookies too.

Working smoke
This smoke gets better with a little age, I would like this sweeter but this is still my favorite working smoke. Also has a nice room note but still leaves a cigar afternote.

Fairly run of the mill - if your thinking your getting a butter nut taste, butter think again. Its fair at best.

Excellent Tobacco
I really like this. I'm a fan of burley tobacco and this is very good. Opening the package and it reminded me of when my mother would make popcorn balls, the smell of butter and vanilla was wonderful. Upon lighting a bowl again the taste of warm vanilla and butter. This is a mild tobacco with no bite and burned to the bottom of the bowl. Very good and will order more.

My new favorite
One of my new favorites. Cool smoking, no tongue bite and doesn't leave a nasty tobacco taste in your mouth. Excellent tobacco for beginners but pleasant for seasoned pipe smokers as well.

Not bad, not great either.
Best thing about it was it's mildness with no bite. Only real complaint was that I envisioned a more robust, flavorful tobacco. That's why I only by an ounce at a time when trying something new.

Great all around
I loved this blend from start to finish. It is now one of my go to aromatics. No bite at all, but it is tangy! Love it!

Nutty, with vanilla and honey
This is the only aromatic I smoke. It has that wonderful burley nuttiness with hints of vanilla and honey. If you like burley blends, this will be a favorite, it's nice and relaxing but not a complicated blend. Lastly and most importantly, it smells so good my wife let's me smoke it in the house. Non-smokers LOVE the room note.

I have to say, this was one of my favorite "on sale" blends I have tried. Came to me with a very good moisture content. Only had to light it once after the charring light. No tongue bite. A very pleasant smoke for when you are out in the woods.

Butternut Burley
There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe how perfect this blend is! I spoke this like a tobacco fiend. I could smoke 4 ounces of this stuff a day if l could and would enjoy every bowl as much if not more than the previous one. The only reason l give this blend five stars (5*s) is because they have not included a choice for 6,7,8, or MORE! Thank You

Scottys Buernut Burley
After trying several different blends, Scottys Butternut Burley is the blend of choice. It is a very smooth smoking tobacco with a good taste, and has no bite After smoking it has a very good lingering flavor. It is very aromatic and non-smokers compliment the way the room smells. Good Job

Not a Fan of Aromatics
I'm not a fan of aromatics but occasionally like to indulge so I bought an ounce of this just to try it out. The bag note was a pleasant cross between butterscotch and maple. The tobacco was not overly moist and not as sticky as most aromatics that I've smoked. Sweet, not overpowering and no bite. Burns well. However, by the end of the ounce I pretty much had my fill of aromatics and the blend became a bit tiring.

My favorite aero.
What an amazing blend. Burn quality is just as good as the taste. It is hands down my favorite aero. I add a little Prince Albert to it to give it some strength. The two compliment each other perfectly. Delicious.

Butternut breakfast burley
A great tobacco for the ride to work. Very basic, yet rich in flavor. Burley and coffee go well together, and the light topping is subtle yet present, adding to the flavor profile. I really enjoy this tobacco over many OTC burleys. I don't notice any "cheap" or chemical tastes or flavors. I could smoke this every morning.

Some love sushi, some don't.
I am glad I didn't write this review after my first try at this Burley. At first, I was put off and thought it was too mild, and left me with a slight chemical taste/feel in my mouth. However, now after my third bowlful I can now that I like it. I don't love it and still feel there is a bit of that chemical feeling present. All in all I feel that is surely a nice mild smoke and can see how so many people like it. Remember, we all taste things differently. Some love sushi, some hate it.

Discovery of a historical pipe tobacco blend.
During my college days in the 60's, I smoked an Edward's Tobacco blend named "Butternut". This blend was a special one created by the Edward's shop in Atlanta, Ga. It has long ago been discontinued. Scotty's Butternut Burley is the best match that I have found. Very pleasing aroma, mild, and a pleasant room note. A welcomed discovery for my tobacco of choice, this is a quality smoking blend that I highly recommend.

Scotty's Butternut Burley
First time I was given a sample of SBB I loved it. I bought a pound and a half because it's an everyday smoke. It's moist out of the bag so I take out a bowlful and let it dry for about a half hour to hour. It packs easily and lights easily as well. I've only had to give it a 2nd light only the first couple times I smoked it b/c it was new to me. Ever since, it's a one match/bowl deal. It vaguely reminds me of Capt Black but I think SBB is far better in that it as much more depth and complexity. The burly is as expected: a nutty, slightly sweet, and leather'ish component. There is no "forward" in this blend to me though ... neither the burley or the cav overpower the other. It's balanced. It starts with that burley but there is already a good cav flavor with it's smooth caramel, buttery, and even hints (to me) of jasmine. Try some. It's awesome.

Don't fear this Butternut
I bought a sample of this a few months back and it was everything the reviews had claimed it to be and maybe even more. They say no tongue bite and it's true... you can puff like a dragon and it's always as smooth as can be. I added 1/3 Latakia to this and it turned into something dreams are made of. I plan on getting a pound of this for blending.

Smooth, soothing, satisfying, and enjoyable.
When I received the package of Scotty's Butternut Blend I was skeptial because I didn't get the aroma from the bag I expected. However after lighting up and a few puffs, I was delightfully pleased, the longer I smoke the better it got! This stuff is great! It burns evenly, doesn't bite your tounge, and it is very satisfying. Has a pleasing room note, which is very important these days...... I'll be ordering more of this blend for sure and certain.

A delightfully uncomplicated smoke
I had such a great experience with Trout Stream that I decided to try another Scotty's blend. Butternut Burley is the one I selected as a follow up. This is a wonderful aromatic that has a warm, comfortable room note. Tastes great because the topping doesn't mask the flavors of the underlying tobacco components. Burns great, easy to light and no tongue bite. If you are a beginning your journey with the pipe, Scotty's blends would be a great place to start...this one in particular. And if you've been around a while, there's a great deal here to appreciate from time to time. Try it out and post a review to share your opinion.

Scottie's Butternut Burley
I have been a pipe smoker for about 45 yrs and chain smoke my pipes. I have been smoking BB for about 10 yrs now. BB is the only tobacco I have found that I can smoke all day with little or no bite. I really like it.
4 out of 5
Not quite but almost
You're absolutely right, this is the mildest pipe tobacco you have sold. The flavor and aroma are a bit on the mild side, and I've had one tobacco which had all the flavor, aroma, and mildness -- and the company went out of business 2 years ago. So the search for the perfect (available) tobacco continues, but this is nice stuff.
Customer Testimonials
A great no nonsense blend. Perfect for quiet weekend mornings in the garage with a cup of coffee. I really enjoy it!
Wonderful smoke! Burns slow and cool, no bite, and no re-lightging. In my opinion, this is a nice mellow smoke that I can smoke all day.
Love this blend! I personally get a buttery, creamy, nutty flavor. Love it and actually just opened the bag to just smell it for awhile.
I read the reviews on this one, sounded like a trial was in order. A pleasant smoke that stays lit... my charring light stayed lit for nearly ten minutes. Don't know if this will be my everyday smoker, but it is a good one.
One of the blends I really enjoy (I don't care much for most of them) this is a nice caramel flavor to it and the room note is sweet and reminds me of caramel/maple syrup but not so heavy it gags you. Pouch note is a bit heavier but makes my mouth water and reminds me of old leather.
I purchased a small amount to try , this is one of my all time best, all day tobacco's. No bite to the bottom of the bowl. I just ordered a pound to go into my inventory.
Very smooth cool burning smoke with a wonderful taste. Definitely in my rotation
Simply put what they said; Make sure this is on your smoke everyday list of aromatics.
Excellent pipe tobacco. Smokes very well, tastes great. My new favorite
My favorite all day blend. No bite, great flavor, excellent room note. I buy it by the pound. And the wife likes it too!
These blend will definitely be my primary smoke. The description is spot on. It has no bite at all, which is important to me for a primary tobacco. I like a smoke with no bite, no sweet taste, or fruity taste; to smoke throughout the day. Butternut Burley has the buttery taste described with a hint of honey and a good nutty taste. It tastes great with hazelnut coffee! I get just a hint of butterscotch taste. I highly recommend this blend, and agree that it would be a great blend for anyone who is just starting to smoke a pipe.
This is the most satisfyingly delicious pipe tobacco I have ever smoked. Will enjoy this smoke on our riverboat cruise down the mississippi. Sitting on our private balcony, watching everything go by.....slowly.
Wonderful, lighter, sweeter blend that goes superbly well in a vaporizer (like the Vapor Genie or Ploom PAX).
The one I keep going back to.... Very soft, easy to smoke AND has a very good taste. In retrospect, this is my #1 pipe tobacco.
A great all day smoke, could become my favorite
This is a surprisingly mellow aromatic tobacco. Perhaps a bit too mellow for my taste as an all day smoke, but it is certainly worthy of being in the rotation. This will now be my "go to" tobacco for breaking in new pipes. It burns cool, dry and doesn't stop until it's at the bottom of the bowl. This tobacco is everything the description says it is. A truly unique aromatic!
The name really says it all... a nice easy flavor without any major overtones... you get good tobacco flavor.. no bite.. and once lit.. will keep going. I love this as an all day blend.... you can smoke this every day and never tire of the wonderful flavor and the room note is very popular with all present. I give this two thumbs up.
