Sugar Ray

P&C's Battle of the Blends pits two tobaccos against each other, and you get to vote for your favorite by submitting a review. Best of all, you get both tobaccos at a bargain price. We'll tabulate the votes and announce the winner at a later time.

Just like in a boxing match, Sugar Ray needed to be a top leader. So in honor of that we named our Battle of the Blend so that you, our P&C Faithful could tell us who the best Flake should be. In the ring we have Mac Baren Vanilla Cream Flake, a sweet experience with a warm silky vanilla top note and we have Erinmore Flake has a unique essence of fruit that will have an enjoyable smoke. Each of these blends are great in their own right, but now is your chance to try them both side-by-side and tell us which is your favorite. Help us name the Sugar Ray Champion.

It will ghost your pipe.
It will ghost your pipe. If you want to try this blend I would recommend dedicating a pipe. I don’t smoke many aromatics. But this is a favorite. I’m not sure the fruity top note, maybe apricots? And has a juice fruit smell from the tin. Smoke slow as it can get a little bite.

Nice topped flake
These flakes have a decent nic hit and a complex topping that is there in just the right intensity. You mostly taste the tobaccos, but the topping is there to add a little something. Nice blend. Will order again.

Longtime friend.
Erinmore Flake was the second non-drugstore type of tobacco that I purchased many decades ago. I loved Erinmore Flake immediately, and it has remained a solid favorite since. While i generally don't dabble in aromatics, this one remains a staple in my rotation. In fact, I think I will open another tin right now. Good stuff here, although I do wish they would go back to the square and rectangular tins. They fit into fishing vest pockets better than the round tins.(By the way, the first was Escudo.)

ERINMORE FLAKE
This is a fine, satisfying flake. Yet either my taste buds have changed, or it yields a different aroma from what I remember, from John Murray's Belfast classic.many years ago. Still I am happy I ordered it.

Not the best
Not what I expected. I had read really good reviews of this online and it fell way short of my expectations, especially because of the price. Upon opening the tin, it has a really sweet inviting smell, but when smoking it, it had a harsh smokey flavor and not a whole lot of vanilla flavor at all.

New Erinmore Just as Good as Original.
I recently ordered this pipe tobacco and have really enjoyed it. It reminded me of many years ago when I was just beginning to smoke a pipe. I experimented with as many different blends as my limited income would allow and Erinmore was a favorite when I could afford it during my college years. It tastes just as good now as it did 50 or so years ago!!!

One of my go to Tobaccos for any occasion.
A good moist flake tobacco. The apple is subtler than it could be. The flakes are thin but easy to fold and roll, or fluff to your liking. I do not like the new round tin. I miss the old square one. But this is a good alternitive to a Navy Flake or cake tobacco. It screams old world with the fine blend and will keep you coming back.

Bites like an Inbred Shih Tzu
I've been smoking latakia blends and Virginias for about a year (before that, I was smoking burleys almost exclusively). I also like cigars. I bought a tin of Mac Baren Vanilla Flake to smoke instead of my usual tobacco, so as to avoid olfactorally offending a friend who will be staying with me for a few weeks. This stuff has a decent flavor, a nice room note, and leaves my pipe smelling wonderful. However, it bites quite badly. I've smoked several bowls of this tobacco, dried out to various degrees, but with similar results. It's only bearable when dried out and mixed 50/50 with a light burley (which also happens to be quite a tasty mixture). I think I'll have to find something else, or just smoke what I want and put up with complaints from the girl.

Good Flavorful Smoke
I have always enjoyed Erinmore, I do prefer the mix to the flake though.

Best vanilla I've ever had, hands down.
Just like I said. Best vanilla I've ever had.

very acceptable
A little temperamental about moisture level, needs to be just right to stay lit without burning too hot. Overall a very acceptable flake.

Like a cigarette in my pipe
Not sure what is going on with this one. I couldn't even detect any vanilla flavors. The smoke was very harsh. It reminded me of a Marlbro Red. I'm going to cellar it, and see if that helps. Otherwise this is not a flavor I will get again. I really wonder if I just got an anomaly, because there are such high marks on this one.

TASTY,COOL & MELLOW
Flake tobacoes are to me, a little fussy. This one is always a little damp and sticky and doesn’t rub out well in my palm. I cut a flake in half across the grain with a scissors, loosen up the strands a little and and insert loosely longitudinally into the pipe bowl. Repeat with the other half. The length of the cut strands nearly comes to the top of the bowl so I am smoking the longitudinal strands down from one end to the other. Loose is good because the tobacco expands in the pipe. One whole flake fills one bowl. The way I smoke, periodic relights are needed. The reward is a pleasantly full bodied smoke with subtle hints of fruit and a wife-approved room note. The fuss is worth it.

Top 5 flakes, top 7 overall tobaccos for me
My go to vanilla, instead of trash tobacco being covered up with too much flavoring, the vanilla rides in the back seat letting the superb tobacco take lead, outta the tin fantastic, aged is phenomenal

Wasn't sure what to expect
I ordered this on a whim and wasn't sure what to expect, I was surprised when it got here, the tin note reminded me of Juicy Fruit Gum. I tried it first in the fold and stuff method and it was just ok, when I rubbed it out WOW what an explosion of flavours, I had to make sure I was smoking the same tobacco. Rubbed out you can taste all the different nuances of this blend, a little grassy, a little citrusy just a fantastic all around smoke and I will be keeping some on hand from now on.

Erinmore flake WOW
My first time smoking a flake. I picked the right 1. A great smoke, very nice aroma. I rub mine out and let it dry, then I load up. Give it a try tou won't be disappointed.

this is a nice smoke.
this is a nice smoke. It's my first time smoking a flake cut tobacco, so packing the bowl took more attention than usual. It has a traditional pipe feel to it. With many Virginias, I feel like I'm smoking hay. So not with this, probably because it's pressed and the mix of the cavendish.

This is the one
This flake has to be my favorite aromatic. I've tri's.ed the 1lb. box but find the 1.75oz. tins are the better choice for me. I don't like the long flakes that come with the box. What a hassle to cut and jar. Taste and room note are excellent and smoked slowly, no bite at all. Not a gooper like some other aro. Wish they stocked the 3.5oz. tin though.

Erinmore Flake revisited
The blend was not as good as I remembered it when I had I years ago. It seem like it was aged longer years ago. Maybe it's just because I have aged and my tastes have changed. I still enjoyed it though. Still very smooth.

Yummy!
This stuff smells absolutely amazing. I'm surrounded by hostile non-smokers and this gets me least grief. I love it for that and it's still strong enough and has just enough flavor to actually enjoy it myself.

EHH
I think its a pretty good blend. I could see this becoming a daily smoke. That being said near the last quarter of the bowl it starts to taste very ashey. I know some might say thats expected but I never really notice it with other blends. Id say if you've ever been interested in this blend give it a try.

Amazing all these years later.
I'm an occasional pipe smoker who tends to take extended breaks away from enjoying my pipes. After a ten year absence, I was was rummaging through my collection the other night and came across a tin of this that I bought 21 years ago. It was one of my first forays into finer aromatic blends. Wow, it's much better than I recall from those days of yester-year!

Great taste, lightning hot
I had such high hopes for this tobacco when I bought it. Giving it 2 stars because the flavor is certainly there, vanilla with a light and sweet almost leathery finish. Unfortunately, after a couple small puffs, my tongue felt like I had just dragged it across hot asphalt. This stuff burns so hot that I just couldn't enjoy it and I smoke my pipes very cool and slow. I tried mixing it with some sweet black Cavendish to cool it down, but the bite was just too much.

They got it right
I'm not a tobacco snob and like all types. Erinmore is my go to flake when I want a flavorful smoke, and I find it smokes best taking it slowly. Love the flavor. If you are thinking about trying Erinmore you won't be disappointed.

Another great teachable moment in pipe blends
The tin is perfect, the paper inside is neat, the tobacco itself is fairly moist, neatly flaked and the tin note greets you with fruit and nut. It is a very neat and tidy overall product. The tin is perfect for a jacket pocket. I did not care for the blend at first, mainly because I do inhale every couple of puffs and found that it was too harsh for my throat. This, and I just wasn't getting that much flavor out of it compared to my other aromatics. Within a few days I took about 3/4 of it and gave it to a friend. Well, last night I was putting another tin away and noticed I still had some Erinmore left so I lit up a bowl only to realize that I never gave this blend a chance. When I first got the blend I puffed away (or sipped, whatever...I know how to smoke) searching for it's essence like some would-be connoisseur and could not find it. Some pass-times are lessons in life. Golf is the same way. Even though I know to relax, take a practice swing, plan the shot etc etc, it still takes me a few holes to do that, and sometimes I make it through a whole round before I realize I was rushing, or not doing X. Same thing with pipes. If you rush a pipe and don't have your routine, if you're not in the right mind frame, you won't get the true experience and you're just blowing smoke. If you just want to puff away you should save that for a cheapo blend. Many of these reviews strike me as coming from would-be connoisseurs who are dissecting the product instead of experiencing it. A book and/or a conversation on a comfy leather couch and a pipe is the experience...separating the experience from the tobacco is like separating intimacy from love and turning the act into a series of positions and sensations. Yes, I know I went too far with that, but we pipe smokers are known to ruminate, are we not?

My favorite pipe tobacco. Wonderful
My favorite pipe tobacco. Wonderful rich aroma and flavor. Erinmore Flake is a true classic of pipe tobaccos. One of the legendary Virginia/Burley Mixtures. The flavor is a fruity yet natural tobacco smoke. I enjoy it all day and in all seasons.

Dessert Flake
I'm wild about Virginia flakes and a bargain shopper so I'm very fond of Peter Stokkebye’s Twist, Navy, and Bullseye bulk offerings. Orlik’s Golden flake is also wonderful. I'm fairly new to pipes and there's a whole lot more to sample but in general aromatics don't interest me. Mac Baron’s Vanilla Cream flake is exceptional though, the topping is delicate, sweet, complimentary. It's nice to find an aromatic I truly enjoy.

VANILLA STEAM IS MORE LIKE IT.
Excellent room note, and very nicely packaged flake tobacco. This blend lacks flavor.....totally. No vanilla or any sweetness, and definately no tobacco taste. The flakes are very nice and consistant and smell great. Tends to get hot QUICK!

Smooth and tasty
My favorite flake for morning smokes or quiet evenings. Mild to medium in body. Just good tobacco.

When Nixon Was King
Not as robust and aromatic as it was when Nixon was in the White House, the last time I smoked it. Still, a cool, slightly sweet and pleasant smoke. I rub it out and add it to other blends or smoke it straight. I am happy with it. There are better Virginia Flakes.

Light top note of fruit. Burns wet, so dry it out a little before you smoke it. Give me Royal Yacht!

The first few smokes were interesting but it had a sour aftertaste that turned me off. Gave up mid-way thru the tin. Based on other reviews, I may revisit later. Perhaps a bad tin?
Didn't finish the tin.

My first flake.
It took me some experimenting as this is my first flake. I finally learned that I like this rubbed out. It also required slow smoking to avoid some bite, but I like it a lot and will probably buy it again. It has a sweetness that I like.

nothing special
Erinmore Flake is nothing special. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either.

Great Smoke
A nice all day smoke. Not to heavy of a topping that it takes away from the virginia's.

Didn't Know what I was missing!
As a dedicated Virginia flake smoker, I have been remiss for many years never having tried Erinmore Flake. Too bad! I never knew what I was missing---I had to order some more right in an attempt to catch up on lost time. I am particularly fond of its composition of Dark Burley and Virginia tobaccos. It has a subtle berry taste that is hardly noticeable, and it improves as the smoke continues. Now, where is that mail carrier?

Good but not up to similar blends from McClellend
Good but not up to similar blends from McClellend. Mild and balanced but just seems not to reach what some other's offer. Too bad because I have heard good reviews for Erinmore.

One of a Kind
I can't decide if this tobacco is an aromatic or just topped differently. It has a distinct flavor that grows on you.

Flake convert!!
Ok so I usually don't leave reviews! With that said here I go. I'm new to pipe smoking and have been favoring aromtic blends with the occasional carter hall/ non aromatic tobacco. I have already established at this time that I just don't like latakia/ English tobaccos. This is my first flake so generally I let it sit out overnight and just rubbed one out. Wow!! What a fabulous and tasty smoke with a decent kick of nicotine! I will always keep some around and if this is what flake tobacco is all about then I'm sold!! I can't wait to try the fold and stuff method.

Make sure to Fold and Stuff on this one, or you're missing out!
My initial two bowls were had after rubbing the tobacco out. I didn't see what the fuss was about. Rather unimaginative, if not bland. Jut for kicks, I "fold and stuff"-ed it on the third bowl, and WOW what a difference! The flavors are so much more defined this way! It raised from a shaky three star to a solid 4.5 stars for me. I can see why it was Tolkein's fav! On the down side, it is very difficult to get started, but once it does, great, gorgeous plumes of smoke!

My favorite vanilla aromatic!
I really like vanilla aromatics and this one is probably my favorite as far as flavor goes. It seems to have a little more kick to it than I like, so definitely don't smoke on an empty stomach! 4 stars.

An old standby
I'm not just sure how long I have been smoking Erinmore Flake; decades, that's for certain. It was one of the first non-drug store blends I encountered and has been a part of my pipe smoking since. While my tastes have moved on to the "English Style" blends, I always keep several tins of Erinmore close at hand. The finer nuances of flavor "profile" are mostly lost on me. I do know that this is a consistently reliable flake. Most often using the fold and stuff way of packing my pipe, it may take several charring lights, but burns evenly thereafter. Medium/mild, nice room note, and slow burning with a bit if sweetness, it has been a favorite for more decades than I like to think about.
