Sutliff Black Vanilla

I just finished a bowl of Sutliff Black Vanilla and I had some thoughts about this kind of tobacco. Vanilla is, far and away, the most popular flavor used in pipe tobacco, and combining vanilla with black Cavendish has been done many times. Some are too sweet, others too moist and some are just bland. Sutliff's Black Vanilla gets it right- the perfect balance of flavor and smoking characteristics.

A Very Nice Surprise.
I thought I would try a new van,,well im GLAD I did. This blend is very nice,,no bite at all .IT packs and burns very well leaving a nice white ash.To my tastes the flavoring is not over powering or strong,,the room aroma is great.I havent had any complaints on the aroma yet no matter where I was smoking this blend. The larger style flake cut was different,,I hadnt had any flake like that for years. It arrived with the just right amount of moisture too.I let my buddy try some of this,,he hadnt smoked a pipe in probably 25 years and he was Blown Away.So now I gotta more for myself and him.25 years ago our pipe tob choices were kind of limited. This stuff does has a very mild different flavor to it that I cant put my finger on but this is A VERY NICE change and would will be in my rotation from now on.I smoke this blend in a very large bent billiard and i have no complaints at all.

Ok for the price. Smells good but a bit lacking in flavor, a few stems mixed in.

Smooth
If you are a black cavendish and vanilla fan, this is a must. It is certainly in the top 10 or 15 blend I have ever tried. It has taste but no bite.

Sutliff fan. Fantastic!
Fantastic! Top notch! Sutliff is very tasty. Minimal to zero tongue bite. Balanced flavor, burns well. Go Sutliff.

Zen in a bowl.
This is a very solid go-to for me. Well cut, perfect moisture. Thick smoke that slowly surrounds your head. Vanilla is definitely the main flavor, but it is subtle, although warm. No bite. Room notes are pleasing. My wife likes it, and she has very stringent room note standards.

It's not what I expected
It doesn't taste like vanilla at all but it's ok.

Great alone, or for blending!
Very smooth with a nice Vanilla undertone. It is a very similar base vanilla flavor to Sutliff's Spicey Vanilla offering, but without the "spice" and not quite as prominent on the pallet. It smokes well once lit, but getting it to light is somewhat difficult for me. I have found this to be great for blending with other tobacco where I am trying to shape the flavor profile or slow down the burn a bit.

Creamy, smooth vanilla.
Delicious. Custard-like, creamy mouth-feel. It smokes cool with no bite. Smells fantastic. There were a couple twiggy bits but nothing to cry about. If you enjoy aromatics and more specifically, vanilla, I highly recommend this tobacco.

I finally found it!
I am not sure how I missed Sutliff tobacco for so many years and have smoked some very good blends that have stayed in my rotation, but Black Vanilla is the best I have had. When it went on sale at P&C last month, I bought an ounce of several Sutliff blends, including Black Vanilla. This is the vanilla blend I had hoped to find for a very long time. It is a pure black cavendish with a very pleasant room note. It is one of the few vanilla blends that I can actually taste the vanilla. Be sure to use a big bowl to smoke this one, or you will be reloading. No bite, burns cool. This is a winner!

Good Smoking Vanilla Cav BUT ...
This smokes well with no bite and the black cav works for me just fine, but I definitely prefer the McClelland VBC better, but that is just my personal taste. I have a bit of a sweet tooth and that is why the MaC VBC is my fav vanilla. That is the only reason I won't buy this again, but I will finish it without complaint and/or blend a bit of it with the Mac VBC.

Not an avid pipe smoker
I like this tobacco. I was traveling aboard in Austria and a older gentlemen was smoking this. It smelled fantastic. I finally tried it and I really enjoyed it. There was almost no bite from hard drags and the room note was extremely pleasant. I find that it's hard to smell the vanilla flavor but this one was very nice. I am going to buy more of it after this first pouch.

Super smooth smoke
This is a mild to medium smoke with a nice vanilla flavor that leaves the room smelling great. Right out of the bag this smoked fantastically - my charring light didn't go out and I smoked a good portion of the bowl before having to re-light (re-lighting is really that big of a deal to me, but...) This is fairly fine cut and will fill the pipe quickly without needing a lot of packing. You may also be surprised at how little there is in the bag when it shows up - it is quite dense in the bag or jar. The vanilla flavor is not overwhelming, but it is noticeable.

Great tobacco, good taste, absolutely no bite, and very pleasant room note. I used it for mixing with other blends to add that sweet touch. I mixed with Lane 1Q and BCA. It burns evenly and not too moist to burn hot. If you like black Cavendish you will find it quite satisfying. Seems to mix with almost any blend to give it some sweetness. I recommend it heartily. Seems all the Sutliff tobaccos are quality, just as the Lane Limited blends are.

Finally Sutliff BV is back in stock! I had been waiting for that email to pop up and say that its back! Some evil greedy piper out there is hoarding all of it for themselves and I was never able to obtain it. The Black Cav that others try to be. Vanilla aroma, butterscotch taste and a cool, dry smoke. Forget Captain Black Royal, pickup Sutliff's Black Vanilla... Thank me later :-)
