Sutliff Crumble Kake - English #1

Crumble Kake - English #1 is a new arrival from Sutliff that will be everything you would hope for in an English blend. The blend is made of Latakia with red Virginias, Burley, and Orientals that gives continuous flavors of slightly leather notes, with hints of earth and nuts and a light, fruity sweetness. If you are looking for an English tobacco that provides a good balance but yet some complexities that is a pressed rubbed out kake, then this Crumble Kake will become your new all-day go to. A great addition to the Sutliff Crumble Kake line.

I was pleasantly surprised with this blend. I was expecting a typical English blend from Sutliff here, only being pressed and sliced into flakes with just an ordinary mild/medium latakia profile. However, these flakes are actually more oriental forward offering a more "balkan" kind of profile which was really satisfying. I think the quality of the overall leaf being used is probably a notch up from what is usually offered throughout their bulk blends. These flakes are in the same flavor wheelhouse as let's say Bengal Slices (without the top note/ white?) Or even Quiet Nights but not quite as full flavored. Sutliff did this one justice, if you enjoy a good medium english/ balkan blend it is worth a try, I will be cellaring some for myself...

Penzance for the Regular Americans
Someone one said this is a poor man's Penzance. Not a bad description when you consider the difficulties in obtaining Esoterica Penzance! I like this blend. It burns well, tastes like any great Balkan blend should, and it's affordable every day.

On the fence
When I opened the tin I enjoyed the smell that hit my nose. Tried to smoke a bit after rubbing out a bowl full. Packed a bowl and tried to light it, it wouldn't take the flame. Tamped the tobacco a d the tried to relight again the flame wouldn't take. Set the pipe down and walked away and went to work in the shop was gone for about 2 hrs. Came back in and tried to light the pipe again. I was rewarded with the light flavors of an English blend the lat was there, the Virginia's, orientals and perique let me know they where there. I enjoyed this smoke. The only other thing I can say is this blend needs some drying time.
