Sutliff Matured Red Virginia 515 RC-1

Regular red Virginias have a flavor that can best be described as toasty-sweet. Processing and maturing red Virginia can bring some surprising results. A lot of the P&C Faithful used to buy McClelland 5100 by the pound because of its zesty flavor. For those who miss that terrific taste, you should try Sutliff Matured Red Virginia 515 RC-1. This isn't an exact match for 5100, but it has a depth of flavor and a tang that you wouldn't normally find in a regular red Virginia, and it's priced very nicely. If you're looking for a deep red Virginia, then try Sutliff Matured Red Virginia 515 RC-1.

Good summer smoke
I bought this along with two other blends to smoke this summer. This is my second favorite behind C&D Winchester. Still a good, cool smoke.

Good stuff!
I use this in many of my home brew blends. I also smoke it straight as well. It is really good both by itself and as a blending ingredient.

Great for blending or by itself
As described and reviewed. Exceptional quality, unique tart deep red taste, very underrated. Would benefit from age or a light stove. I'm going to try it as base for a copy of Rattray's Red Rapparee.

Sweet and tangy red Virginia for utopian like pleasure
Wow! I was looking for a red cake and all that I could find was this and krumble cake. The krumble is ok but this is great ! Upon opening the lb bag I was a little worried it was too dry but after firing it up the fear subsided. The smell upon opening was a sweet and strong vinegar aroma but not really ketchup like mccllend was . Very sweet with a nice tangy touch through the first third of bowl . Next third it smoothed out and was very bread and slightly creamy after , last bottom of bowl returned sweeter and stronger and heavier . I bought 2 lbs and glad i did !!! Cellaring this a pd in 2 oz mason jars . The rest half lb w latakia and smyrna turkish . The rest w/ oriental . A small jar on its on for smoking immediately and I don’t think it will last long! Highly recommend and may knock OGS off the top for my favourite smoke !! Get some of this you wont be disappointed!

New favorite
I bought this tobacco to try my hand at mixing. However, when I smoked it by itself, I found a new favorite. I plan on buying this tobacco for the foreseeable future.

Good Substitute for McClellan's 5100 rsd cfe
When I heard recently that Sutliff 515 RC-1 red Virginia blend was similar to McClelland's 5100 Red Cake (RIP), I had to try some. There were many McClelland blends I liked, but 5100, along with the Frog Mortons, were my favorites. I ordered 2 ounces of the 515. This is usually enough for me to get to know a blend. By the way, the name here seems an obvious nod to 5100 Red Cake. I mean, 515 - 1 as a reference to 51 hundred, and RC as a reference to Red Cake? Anyway, even after a few bowls of 515, I could see the similarity to 5100 Red Cake. The tobacco was at the right moisture level. The “bag note” was… well, a little grassy, maybe, but there really wasn't all that much of a scent to my nose. 515 is a mature red Virginia with a nice, gentle sweet taste. Some reviewers have noted a lemony, sour taste they didn't like. Well, I've not been getting any of that, although there is a slight tartness to it. I can also taste a little earthiness and breadiness in it. I also like the mouth feel and body of this blend. It produces a fair amount of thick smoke for a Virginia. This blend is very well-behaved. It burns well with minimal relights, and provides a pretty long smoke when packed firmly. In comparison to 5100, 515 RC-1 is perhaps a bit milder in strength and taste, but not by much. Maybe 5100 was a bit more tart. Although not an exact match (and should we really expect that anyway?), Sutliff 515 RC-1 is remarkably similar to 5100, and for me is a very acceptable substitute. Sutliff has hit a home run with this blend, I think. Recommended.

This is it...
As a long time disciple of the church of McClelland, I can say this is about as close it comes to a matured red Virginia you might find in any of the McClelland Virginia line. It’s not a perfect match, but for me it has the mellowed, full body of an MC blend, a roundness and smokablility that you won’t find in anything without a few years age on it. I know this will only get better and am making sure I will have this in my cellar as long as I can keep stocking up on it.

Great stuff
This is some great Virginia. I never had 5100 but this stuff is good in its own right. Stands on its own two feet as a good smoke. Smells like ketchup, which follows through in the taste. Burns fairly cool and doesn’t bite. Recommend.

Almost there
This Viginia looks and smells just like a great McClelland matured red, however, it falls short on taste. Maybe some age would improve it. It's worth the price to try it.

Sutliff Red Virginia
Wonderful tobacco. Smooth, rich Virginia blend. Satisfyingly tangy with a slight ketchup aroma.

Is it 5100?
Is it 5100? Nope. But it is as enjoyable. The tangy and vinegary notes combine with the sweetness of the virginia in just the right way. As a dedicated McClelland fan, I have been searching for something that is reminiscent of their unique blends. 515C is probably as close to a match of 5100 that you will find and even then it isn't dead on but it has merits of its own that makes this blender also a regular smoke.

Suttlif Navy Flake
Not bad but not close to the McClellan 2015. Lacks depth.

This one is a keeper....
Toasty, Semi-Sweet, Satisfying. That would be the three words I would use to describe this blend. Is it Mccelland Red Cake 5100? No not necessarily but it doesn't need to be. Halfway down the bowl you will sense some 5100ish qualities coming through. Aroma of vinegar right out the bag = not a bad thing. Another 6 oz coming my way to cellar as I can only see the really improving with some age.

Strange but good
After my jars of McClelland had been empty for awhile I was happy to receive this. Over time the sad truth is that nothing will replace Mc’s Virginia’s. It is very flavorful and has a apple cider vinegar smell in the jar. Strangely it just seems artificial compared to Mc’s but being that it does vaguely remind me of theirs I will be ordering it again.
