American black Cavendish is usually made of Burley that's been sweetened, toasted, and then sometimes steamed and flavored, but in Europe, they often take a different approach. They begin with ripe, sweet, bright Virginia and subject it to a slow fermentation process that gradually darkens the tobacco and causes the sugars within to caramelize, producing a very different flavor than its US cousin.
